That's wierd. Is the Friendly Arm-area on your map drawn in black? Or is it still grayed out? If it is gray you can only get there via an area that's directly next to it. Try going two areas east of Candlekeep and exit that area to the north. The Friendly Arm Inn should then be depicted in black on your map and you should be able to access it. Don't know if you've already tried this, but it's the only solution I can come up with.

To enter an area you haven't been to before you have to enter not only from the adjacent tile but also from the side of the tile that is next to the tile you want to enter. A good idea is to exit from all four sides of a tile when you first enter it as that will open up all the adjacent tiles. To get to the Friendly Arm Inn from the area next to Candlekeep you must exit from the top or north side of the tile.

That's what I was trying to say, although I must admit that your way of saying it is a bit less obscure

I assume you just left Candlekeep and were present when Gorion was killed. The map you "wake up" on has a road -- take it east. You might want to wander off the road to where you were attacked and look around for any "goodies" (always a good idea to move the mouse around areas looking for items to "light up"). As you follow the road, you might come across some signposts, one of which should point you in the direction of the Friendly Arms Inn. Note that an Inn would want to be accessible to travelers, so would want to be on a road. On the other hand, less reputable parties (bandits, monsters) might want to be out of sight, so might stay away from roads.
