Is there a way for a cleric to memorise his spells without resting ?
I am currently playing a solo ranger/cleric, and do not want to spend too much time on this game if a cleric cannot replenish his spells without resting the way a mage can. Any advice on how to accomplish this would be appreciated. |

A mage cannot replenish his spells without rest. I know, I know, the game allows you to do that, but that is besides the point. The rules does not and it is a flaw in the game.
They made an error in one class, but didn't repeat it in another. In shorter terms - no you cannot replenish your spells without rest. ... actually come to think of it I may be wrong here. There is a bug that allows you to cast Simulacrum indefinately from Vhailor's Helm. I cannot recall if Shield of the Archons allows you to re-memorize spells. If that is the case then you can technically replenish your spells without sleep.

Well, Shield of the Archons does not restore spells, but Wondrous Recall (Level 6) restores 2 spells of 5th level or lower. But since casting all these spells and exploiting bugs takes a lot of time and work, why don't you just rest? Restores all spells, heals you, and takes about 1/2 a second. Especially in ToB where you can just use the planar portal to go back to Hell where there is no ambush chance. If you have something against rest then please explain because fatigue can be a problem after a week of sleeplessness. Either way, good luck with that!

In my version of BG2/TOB, it is not possible to cast simulacrum indefinitely from Vhailor's Helm. At any rate, the duplicate character is created at only 60% of the caster's level and does not have his full range of spells.
Spoilers ahead !!! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > To explain the reason for my question, I was thinking ahead to the final battle where you cannot rest. If I could have my ranger/cleric cast his spells only once (including Wondreous Recall), he would not stand much of a chance and I would be better off using another character class. By the way, I see nothing wrong with using the "flaw" in the game (as mad=dog calls it) which allows a mage to replenish his spells without resting, since in the final battle, your opponent can retreat at her leasure to recharge ("I need more power !"). At any rate, if this was not possible, there would be no way for a solo mage to finish the game. |

For a Mage, they can cast the Wish spell, one of which's options allows you to restore yourself as though having a full night's rest, including spell recovery! It can only be used once however, so that is best saved for the final battle.
Spoilers! - - - - - - Yes, the final opponent is indeed cheap in that way, but in a way it makes sense given that she has many other souls/essences to draw power from, whereas you have but one! -Brainless One PS: It is possible to beat the final opponent soloing with any class probably. Single-classed fighters I have done before, so a Ranger with all Priest spells should have no problem! |

The cheapest way I can think of (and it's definitely a cheat) is to open up shadowkeeper and load a recently made save from shadowkeeper. This new save will treat you as if you're fully rested.

Eh? You are a Cleric/Ranger, not a pureclassed Cleric. There are many ways to solo BG2, not just by spellcasting. People have soloed with pureclassed Fighters, Thieves, etc...
Plan out your fight, ration your spells. You have a strong melee warrior, exploit that to your advantage. With Armor of Faith, Hardiness and the Defender of Easthaven, you can easily toe to toe with the Final Boss. To give you one tip on how to play the Cleric/Ranger. EDIT] Oops. The hardest part about the final fight is taking down the boss' spell protections. If you can do that, the boss is vulnerable to sustained physical attack (Greater Whirlwind). If you have the flail that slows enemies down (and if you're a Cleric / Ranger, you should - it's arguably that class' ideal weapon), that works like a charm. The elemental damage goes through Stoneskin and if you found the two extra heads, the chance of the slow effect goes up to 50% without a saving throw!
Of course, if you have Ascension, it becomes a little harder. Even if you do have Ascension, there are still many different ways to finish it. One of my favorite accounts is this one.

Thanks for all the replies so far!
Just to comment on some of the points which were raised: Cheating: I do not like to cheat (Shadowkeeper is a no-no), ever since I hacked my very first game of BG in frustration (at the time I knew nothing about using different strategies). Wish: wish I could have my cleric/ranger cast it! In my previous two solo runs, I first played a sorcerer and then a dual-classed kensai/mage. No problems there. I could cast Wish as many times as I wanted using PI (although I did run out of images sometimes and had to reload). Soloing with any class: I guess it is possible if you really know the game inside and out, but I am not such a "hot" player (I still get sweaty palms during every "boss" fight!). In my humble opinion, some classes are much easier to solo with than others (witness any spellcaster using Project Image). Armor of Faith, Hardiness, etc.: that is exactly the problem, you cast them once and that's it. But as you know, the final fight is a very long one and I would not want to have to ration my spells and HLAs. I'd probably be better off using a pureclassed ranger (at least he can cast Wish! - I think). I was actually very upset to find out that my ranger/cleric (at levels 13/15) has his spellbook greyed out (I guess the developers thought this would make him too powerful?). The flail: I have already equipped my r/c with this great weapon, however, if only the elemental damage gets through (a maximum of five damage points per hit), it is going to be a loooong battle! All things taken into consideration, I guess I'll take a break from this attempt, unless another reply to this post convinces me otherwise. A pity in a way, because so far, the ranger/cleric has proven to be quite powerful (by the way, I imported this character from my last solo BG1 game, in which he did very well). |
