A very strange thing happened to me. I am playing with tactics mod and started in Chateau Irenicus once again.

Inevitably I had to face Iliych and his goonies. He may be a communist philosopher but he's not a smart one actually. He can't even open doors.
Used this to my advantage and separated all his fellows thanks to my velocity advantage from the boots of speed (BG1), slamming doors in their faces. Well, then they fell one by one. Glabrezu first, then the golem, Karamasov, Shiwago, Rasputin; all died a lonely death in their chambers. Leaving Ilyich. Leaving indeed, because - he was gone! I searched the whole level for about half an hour (real time), but he was nowhere to be seen. Is this coward hiding, did it ever happen to anybody else? Quite annoying, cause through this I did not only miss his loot, but it spoiled the acorn quest and the djinni/bottle/sword quest as well.

Weird. Try casting Detect Evil or Know alignment to see if it detects his presence.

I've never experienced that myself either. I assume that you've hit the 'Tab' button and searched for his equipment on the floors (?). He might have ended up dead courtesy of an 'area of effect' spell (e.g. the Fallen Deva's Fire Storm).

b.t.w., the latest version(s) of Tactics don't allow you to slam doors on the lower level.

No area effect spells used in the fight. The only area effect thing was my thief traps. They killed nobody (watched the status/text line on the bottom of the screen)
Last time I saw him was in the big round room in the center of the level (the one with the Otyugh). There he clinged to one of his fellas, whining and shivering, as I lured his friend away for slaughtering. Well, when I returned there, he was gone. Tab key was used, at least in the areas where the fighting went on.
Since TOB we all know that fear can make you explode and teleport away - but Iliych?

HE's not stuck behind a door when you opened them is he? Sometimes the fog of war is revealed but the person doesn't show up

I'm keeping the spoiler content low, as I'm a big fan of finding things out for oneself....even the most recent Tactics versions will allow you to open & close certain doors on the 1st level to your heart's content--providing that you don't screw up your chances of being allowed to do so. (Yes, I'm being very oblique. Sorry.)

^ Yes you are! No need to apologise, I'm now going to have to do some investigating! Maybe "screwing up my chances" is what I do as a matter of course!

I may be wrong on this, but Iliych and his goons are after ME. They usually all attack me on sight. So he should be showing up whenever I come close to him. As I searched the complete level he should have come forth even if I didn't see him first. That pretty much rules out the fog of war as a factor. The only reason may be we both patrolled the level on opposite ends all the time and vice versa. But believe me, I DID search carefully. So I tend to assume I did kill him unknowingly while concentrating on the others. Though I have no idea how - especially as he is not easy to kill with his healing potions and all. May his foul body rest in peace wherever fate struck him. Bhaal's only legitimate heir has more important things to tend to. I move on.
