Where is the second half of the mindflayers' rod needed to open the western door in level 4 of Watcher's Keep? The "Perfect" Guide says it is in the south room, but they're as right about that as they are about Imoen and Nalia.

Bit lazy to find out the answer myself, but the faq by DSimpson at GameFAQs is pretty through and reliable (although not as acknowledgable on the finer points of play).

There is a half in the south room. It's dropped by an ulilithid. The other half is in a container in the western room with four umber hulks. If you press and hold the TAB key doors, containers and ground items will be highlighted making it easier to locate what you miss. Always to this and scan the area before you leave. Be aware that the door to the oil room is not only locked, but also trapped.

You might have already picked it up and didn't realize since they combine together automatically IIRC.

It's very small - just a small bag looking thing - that can easily be hidden amongst the corpses. I walked out without picking it up too and spent ages wandering around before I went back to where it had been dropped. It does autmatically combine with the other piece too.

Everything the others have said is all too true for that item in that section of the dungeon. Enter the room and hold down the tab key. it is usually hidden amongs the debri.
