Should I solo my kensai/mage or use a party, I have both SOA and TOB, so i'l be able to make it to level 40 (not likely with a party)

well are you experienced or not? That is really the main question, I woulnd't advise solo for your first run through, but im pretty sure you have gone through before, so I would say go for a solo for a nice challenge. And make sure your on insane. Kensai/Mage is a fun option.

I'm trying my hand at a Solo Game for the first time also. I chose to play a Skald (Bard Kit) because they get a +1 bonus to hit and damage with every weapon. Of course, they still attack on the Thieves Table (I think), so I don't hit as often as a fighter would, but I get magic spells and the ability to Identify on sight darn near anything I pick up - so it evens out.

If you want to do the kensai/mage combo, would recommendation I would make is to take Grandmastery in the staff. You find a +1 Quarterstaff very early in the game, and you have several good options to choose from as you travel through Akthala also. The Staff of Krynn, Staff of Power, and Staff of the Magi area all good options with good bonuses and extra abilities attached. Plus, you would be able to use your weapon of choice after making the switch to a mage.

The other obvious choice for a Kensai that is going to dual to a mage would be a dagger. There are several nice daggers in the game. The Stilleto of Demarchess has a chance to HOLD your opponent with each hit and you gain it fairly early in the game. Torgal's Claw and Neb's Nasty Cutter are two more nice weapons that you can specialize in as a kensai, yet still use as a mage also.

I created a kensai for another party I was taking through BGII and gave her the standard dual-wield in katana's. I planned to dual her to a mage, but now I'm not so sure. While katanas do fit the kensai class from an RP standpoint, they don't make much sense if the kensai knew they were going to study the arcane arts eventually. In that case, it makes more sense to study a weapon that will be usable by a mage as well as a kensai. So I guess my kensai will remain a fighter (or I might dual her to a different class) and I suppose I will create another kensai to dual to mage.

Personally id be taking proficiencies in katanas for a kensage. Dak'kon's Zerth Blade. Katana+2, grants an extra level 1,2,3,4 spell. that dual wield with celestial Fury is a nice combo... also rather common
