I can't reinstall Baldur's Gate. Win 95. For some reason, it seems to think I still have it installed. When I try to install using setup.exe, it unistalls (even though the game isn't there. I've unistalled multiple times). When I run Baldur.exe, instead of 'install' it has 'play'. When I hit play, it says 'first time run game, config...blah blah blah'. I manage to config it, and then I get this weird error message about a programmer and a missing line, probably because the game isn't installed.

What I want is, either to know how to get around this stupidity, or what files to move from the disks to what files to get it to run (norm install). Or what file do I have to hunt down and delete or change to make it understand the game isn't there?

I had the same problem a while back with Black & White. I gave up on it and it eventually dissapeared... that might have been because of the reformat though

I'm not reformating, the game isn't THAT good! (don't burn me! I'm, ah, allergic to stakes.)

I had that exact same problem a week ago. I tried threats, incantations, voodoo rituals, but nothing worked. I tried to install, and it said, "Are you sure you want to remove all the selected components?" I said yes, and it said, "Uninstalling," the progress bar jumped to 100%, and that was it. That was all it would do. I went to Add/Remove programs, and it claimed that I still had BG2 installed. No matter what.

They say that the definition of insanity is to do the exact same thing over and over and expect a different result. Well then, chalk me up, because it was on about the 20th time I told my computer to Remove BG2 that it finally worked, and would let me reinstall. A random-chance bug defeated by random-chance serendipity.

Your registry still contains the keys that tell the autorun program that the game has been installed. Load up regedit and search for those keys.

Be careful with that program, the keys you need to kill all contain the word 'baldur', so if your careful this is safe, but if you happen to delete the wrong thing, you can kill your computer.

I learned this the hard way. ALWAYS USE UNINSTALL INSTEAD OF JUST SELECTING THE FOLDER AND DELETING.

Oh, DON'T just delete folders. Oops.
I got it, I tricked it by installing ToB, bringing up the uninstall menu, while that was up I installed SoA. Or maybe it just stopped being stupid.
And it claimed that I couldn't open regedit. Argh!

In regedit, the key you need is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersi on\Uninstall . Go through the keys there... it's one of the ones up the top that are just wierd numbers. It will have "Baldur's Gate 2" somewhere in the right pane. Once you find that one, delete it (and no others).
