My first time playing, I"m still on chapter 2, and I'm playing a kensai that I've dual classed to a mage, now currently at level 9 for both classes (I've since read that kensai/mage can be powerful to the point of cheesiness, but I thought it sounded like a cool combination and don't regret doing it.)

I've noticed that in the heat of battle, he has to be right next to the enemy to attack- every time. While developing his mage side, he hasn't had much to contribute and has been on the sidelines of battles. As he grew stronger, though, I noticed his habit of going right up to his target, whether he's casting a spell or throwing darts. I can't figure out why, and it's really annoying me. Last night I wanted him back lobbing magic missiles, but he walked right up to the guy and then cast them. Because of the number of opponents, he took a beating and it was only his kensai level hp that saved him.

What's going on?

One of two reasons:

1. Could be a result of his default script.
Switch off the Artificial Intelligence (Lantern in the bottom right hand corner of the screen).

2. Charactor has a melee weapon active - make sure that he has an active ranged weapon equipped as, when not busy casting spells, he will automatically attack with whatever weapon he has equipped - and melee weapons will obviously bring him into the fray.

He's probably been Blinded. Spellcasters & archers will run right up to their targets if they're Blind. Check your character affects screen or look for the little Blindness symbol over his portrait.

If he is Blind, sometimes it just wears off, but certain types require a Heal spell, I believe.

I always have the same problem when i actually play a mage or other spellcaster! it is quite irritating! the problem is that it doesn't matter what kind of script i choose!! he/she always would walk up to the enemy and say hi!(And getting beaten the shit out of her/him :S )
I solved the problem by giving the wizard/mage a sling so it doesn't have the urge to be in close combat.
I think it really helps.

first to Oisin,

welcome

don't use any script, just make it none, and do whatever move yourself is one way to prevent your PC or NPCs rush into the midst of a bunch of monsters.
as for the Kensai->Mage thing, he shouldn't be able to use darts (a Kensai, dual to mage or not, can use throwing axe but not other ranged weapons AFAIK). If even casting magic missle, a mage needs to walk close to the enemy and cast it, I think it's either he's under the effect of blindness as Imrahil mentioned, or the view is blocked (say in the hallway), and he has to see the enemy to cast the spell, and so he walks to them. If it happens in open field combat, and not effecteed by blindess, it might be a bug.

Either a glitch then or change the state of the lantern button.

Lymond has a 9/9 Kensai->Mage. He can use Darts until he gains a level. Once he gets his Kensai abilities back, he's going to lose the Darts, though.

But if he is blinded then he wouldnt see the enemy at all since he's soloing... If he can see him from far away he cant be blinded..

Actually it sounds like he's playing with a party. Easiest way to check for blindness (even if it doesn't show up on the character screen) is to walk the suspect character out of sight of your party. If he can see (light up the screen) a large area, he's fine; if only a small amount of the fog of war is removed, he's blinded.

If it's been that way for awhile, use a heal spell or the rod of resurrection on him (note the rod can be used to heal characters who aren't dead...)

Oh sorry lol he never mentioned he's soloing... I seem to always associate kensai->mage with solo..
