You should have got a few documents from Daveorn in the Cloakwood mine. Read these, and Baldur's Gate should be open for you. If not, well then it must be a bug in the game, and to be honest, I've heard quite a few people having the same problem.

Its been a LONG time since I played BG1. But if I remember correctly there is a smuggler at the southern end of the Bridge leading to Baldur's Gate that will offer to smuggle you into the city for about 100 gold. I always took him up on his offer so I don't know what the other options are.

I do remember that entering Baldurs Gate occurs in chpater five and i believe Cloakwood is chapter four, so you should be able to get in.

Aledrian, correct me if I am wrong but doesn't your map ALSO update when the mines are flooded??? I though that doing so would ALSO trigger the City of BG appearing.

I do not have the documents at this time. I will have to go back to a previous saved game. But I did read them all.

I am not able to get to the Bridge just below BG either.

????

As it happens, I'll be doing the Cloakwood mines tomorrow, so if you're still stuck by tomorrow, I'll post here and tell you exactly what I did to get the entrance to Baldur's Gate open.

And Micah, flooding the mines would indeed trigger it, but seeing as you lose two points of reputation from doing it, I tend not to.

I triggered the floods and opened up Baldurs Gate. Reputation is way overrated. Wait, do you need to take to the bounty hunter lady in Naskel? in order for BG to open up? I remember her telling me she had been recalled to BG.

Getting your map updated to get into BG isn't necessary--the city is already on your map when you start the game. Look at your journal--if it says 'Chapter Five,' then (unless you have a bug) you can enter BG. Go north from the Friendly Arm Inn, that's the Ankheg map. Go north again, and that's the Bridge map (Wyrm's Crossing). You should be able to get here no matter WHERE in the game you are--you could go to this map without even clearing the Nashkel Mines, but you won't be able to go ACROSS the bridge until you've beaten the Cloakwood. Now, the tricky part most people have is this: Once you're across the bridge, go to the western edge of the map, and you'll see the outer wall of BG City. You have to kind of hug this wall and walk along it until you clear enough Fog of War to see some walkable ground INSIDE the wall. Go under the archway that you can't see, then go West onto the new map. Ta-da, you're in the city.
Go North from Wyrm's Crossing to go to the Zombie Farm, or Northeast to go to Ulgoth's Beard (if you have ToSC).
Now, if your Journal says you're in Chapter Five and you STILL can't get to BG or the Bridge map, you have a bug. Follow the steps I outlined and if you still can't get in, let us know and we'll help cheat you there. (We are very familiar with using the cheat codes to get around the bugs in the game.)

I made it in. I had to get in through the North East corner of the farm (just south/west of the bridge). Follow the Yellow brick road (white).

Thanks All.

Know should I go to BG first or do the expandtion (Sword Coast)?

That depends on how tough your guys are. You can go to Ulgoth's Beard before entering BG, just be well-advised on the ToSC quests given there.
1) A mage named Shandalar wants to send you to an island to retrieve his cloak--You won't be able to come back until you've got it, so rest, heal up, and pack plenty of ammo. A level 5/6 party should be able to scrape through, but be warned that there are traps.
2) A mage named Mendas also wants to send you to an island--Know that there are no shops or inns anywhere on it, so take EVERYTHING you might need. May I suggest Healing Potions up the yin-yang? There are traps here too, but only at the end (at least 80% Find Traps). Your party should be at least 6/7. Turn up the Brightness on your monitor, too, for the last bit.
3) A Dwarf wants you to walk all the way to Durlag's Tower just to get his damned dagger. A guy named Ike gives tours of the place. Do NOT go to Durlag's unless you've got 100% Traps, and your party is around Levels 7-8. Do the upstairs first, because the downstairs is hell.

You can, of course, go to Ulgoth's and not do any of the quests--yet. If you've got some extra cash, go buy some unique goodies at the Inn.
