What exactly is multiplayer like? How does the combat work?

It's excatly same as single player in terms of story line and everything except that more than a player play it (duh) and each is controlling a different character. Comabat is basically same except that again the characters are controlled by different players.

like ZFR said it is exactly the same, except it does seem more fun when you are playing with some other real players, just one thing, if you comit yourself to a game then make sure you and the people you are playing with have time to play, I have been waiting to play with a mate for a few months now, we are never free at the same time, or when we are like a couple of weeks ago I get a stupid ToB error. So that is my word of warning. Other than that it is great!

I few tips on multiplayer:

All players need to have the same patches and mods as each other, and everyone must either have ToB or no one (game versions must be exactly the same).

The person starting the game is the "host" and has the responsibility to assign control of characters to the various players...this includes any of the NPCs that join your party--they will fall under the host's control by default, but can be given to any player

Your party size is still maximum of six--they can be six characters that are made by the players, or a combination of player-made characters and NPCs.

Games go much quicker and smoother if you take a little time at the beginning to discuss how you want to coordinate combat, and ways to minimize the use of 'pause' (when one person pauses the game, it is paused for everyone) Consider letting experienced players control the mages and clerics, so the whole group isn't waiting around for someone to figure out what spell to cast next.

Also if you have a lot of people playing then here is a good idea which we have used in previous games.

The host keeps the server open all the time (obviously he had ADSL) and anyone can log in at any time, and take control of characters etc. this idea may not seem so good as you may think you will miss some of the action but it is good because it keeps the game moving so you can actually finish the game, which is the hardest thing about multiplayer games. Good luck.
