Usually when I play BG2 I do almost all of the subquests before I go and fetch Imoen. The main character is usually at least level 16, and I normally have several high-level characters before I even reach Spellhold.

No more. I've actually managed to breathe new life into the game by rescuing Imoen within 15 game days! The only optional quest I chose to do was the D'Arnise Hold - then right off to get little miss muffet herself.

So, my main character is now level 10. Imoen is level 10. Anomen is the top dog level-wise at the dizzying heights of level 11.

The Underdark is definately going to be a little more interesting now, and I can forsee that some of the battles may even be challenging - instead of my usual waltz through them.

Anyhow, time to get through Spellhold!

Good luck!
You'll probably be surprised to hear that more people follow this path than you think. In my current load, I'm going solo, so I couldn't care less if I get to Spellhold first or whatever, so I'm just beefing up on as much XP as possible before heading over to whip some wizard butt

I also wish you luck especialy in the underdark. I followed the same path you are taking when I first played the game but it wasn't really planned. It was chalenging but possible.

Do you have the Cheese Wedge of Balduran? Some call it a "shield" but it will help immensely in the Underdark at such a low level.

Yeah, it was the ONLY item I purchased before setting off.

Cost me just over 19K though, but probably worth the investment with my characters at such levels (I remember my first time facing beholders with low level characters without it - very painful!).

Yes, but that's because they're supposed to be tough. By using the shield, you take away their challenge. I personally don't like the shield, mainly becuase of it's decrease in strength.

Not good. I assume you play with Tactics and even if you don`t those Sahuagins are pain in the rear so always, always buy Shield Of Reflection.

lol.

Usually (!) I do indeed face the Improved Sahuagins and the might of the missiles!

However, this time I deigned to uninstall that particular component

This run through is more of a... group effort. I actually have a full party and I want to see how they all interact and get on throughout the game.

I suppose you could say that this game is more for roleplaying purposes over powergaming (unlike my usual games).

My last three complete runthroughs have been with:

Kensai/Mage, Kensai/Thief, Assassin/Fighter

Powergaming is one thing, cheating is another. I force ALL of these characters to play through BG1 and TOTSC before I can get my hands on them.

Fairs fair after all

Why do people still not know that you can literally skip about 40% of Chapter 6, including the Southern Tunnels, and it'll still be there for you when you return?

Not to single you out or anything, Illumina.

I think it would be easiest, at such a low level, to work with the drow, and when Matron Mother asks for a component, you give her the Elder Orb's eye. Almost no effort, compared to the Illithid and the Kuo-Toans. You just sort of stand there.
And it's easier to do all of that than fight your way to the exit without Adalon's help.

But that's just my oh-so-humble opinion.
