Hi!

I`ve just started playing Baldurs Gate(without exp pack) and I`m a bit confused about the ulcaster dungeon.
Mr.Ulcaster said something about a book he wants me to get...but I can`t find it! I have only come to the first level in the dungeon and I can`t get any further. I friend of mine said that there were at least 2 or 3 rooms(levels) in the dungeon but how? I`ve found all traps that there is which is only two fire bombs, the second I did not manage to lockpick so I just walked over it. No secret doors to appear. So I suppose the problem is that I haven`t found the door which leads me to the next level/room. I`ve walked close up to every wall without luck. I would really appreciate any input on this one.

Btw this is my first RPG ever.

Welcome Pippin. Now, I'm afraid your friend is wrong. There is only one level of Ulcasters dungeon. Have you found the firebomb where the dead body is????? Well if you haven't let me give you a tutorial. You enter the ruins of the School. You see to passageways. The one from YOUR RIGHT(not your char) leads to experiance, with a jelly fight. There are some items locatated there. Now, the left passage leads to a dead body on that hallway. Loot him, and continue. You'll fight a bunch of wolves (different amounts depending on your level) Finish that fight. Continue down to the end of the room. You can go to the other right hallway, which leads to a spider fight. Kill the spider for XP if you want. Now, its a bit tricky to continue on, you must go to the opposite end, and squirm your way through that invisible passage. Continue down those passageways, until you meet a dead body, two actually. Watch out, theres a fireball trap there. Now disarm it, fight off the enemies in the next room (random) and then kill mister Vamparic Wolf. He can paralize your guys, so be careful. Disarm the trap by the bonepile, take the loot, WITH THE TOME, then exit.

One other thing: The Wolves (except the vampiric guy) respawn, if you reload the game while you are in the dungeon. If you party has good AC, however, this is a great opportunity to eran cheap xp.

Hi again and thanks for the answer. Unfortunately I have not found anything new. There is two traps right or is it more? In case I have disarmed one and I just walked over the other one because Imoen didn`t manage to disarm it, both were fireball traps. I`ve already cleared out all the enemies and even more, including the vampiric wolf. Still I`m not sure of the invisible passage you mention, can`t find anything. You`re talking of a dead body(two actually), I`ve found two bodies but I`m not sure whether the second I found actually is two or one. Sorry bothering you.

I don't think there's a need to apologise *benevolent smile*
We at the IW are extremely happy to help (show off our knowledge ) and questions is what keeps this board alive.

I myself have never found an entrance to the other part of the dungeon, though I could see it was there, and I recall coming ast the bodies you describe. Apperently, there are even more.

Sir Jorlon, or anyone else who knows, could you handwalk us past this
(think of counting rooms, describing the rooms, pointing to corners and so on)
I'm actually quite curious myself...

About Ulcaster: As Sir Jorlon said, there's only one floor. He mentioned the 'invisible' passageway because a common problem that most newbies run into is that early on in the dungeon there's a passageway you need to go through, and because of the shadows and the Fog of War (The algorithm that puts things in shadow isn't quite perfect, especially in narrow passageways), you can't see it unless you put someone right up against the southwest wall so they can look DOWN the passageway, and thus make it visible. So you kind of have to know where the hallway is before you can even see it.
The goal of the Ulcaster dungeon is simple: Find the book. There's only one book to be found, it's a History of the Sisters of Light and Shadow, or something like that. It's the only one in the game, so if you dropped it somewhere and can't find it again, tough luck. You're only missing out on 1500 EXP, though, so it's not that important.
There are in fact THREE Fireball traps in the dungeon: The first one I found is in the southern part (which is completely empty), the second is at the end of a long NW-SE hallway, right past the pair of dead bodies (the second body is really tiny, looks like a stunted Halfling), and the third is protecting a big pile of what looks like decayed bones and rubbish (and loot). Between Traps #2 and #3 are: A room with about 6 Worgs or Dread Wolves (There's a Wand or Fire and a couple of potions on the floor), then when you get close to the door to the room with the decayed bones & rubbish, a Vampric Wolf attacks you. Right past the room with the bones & rubbish is a room with a pair of Dread Wolves, and that's the whole dungeon.
Here Endeth The Lesson.
