How in the world are you supposed to get past these damnable chess pieces?
I have tried being patient and taking out the pawns. I have tried massive fireballs. I have tried webspells combined with magic missle. I have tried arrows of dispelling. I can manage to take out the pawns okay. It is just the next group of players. They all come advancing at once and there is just no time to take them out before they trash on my group. I have tried to focus on taking out the king solely, but nothing really seems to work. If I just have my characters stand there long enough will the pieces eventually start advancing across or do I have to make the first move to uncover the shadows areas? |

well, some advice, don't send ur players to move, they dont' know about that rule with the wrong movement,a dn chances are they'll trigger lighting bolt.
First thing, summon lots of monsters, have ur mage memorize as many summoning skills and possible, then have ur summoned monster take out the pawns and such, then move slightly ahead, and once you have the king viisble, DO EVERYTHING THAT YOU CAN TO KILL HIM FIRST!! dont' worry about the knights nad all that, once the king's dead, its' game over. What i did was that i got my team of summoned monsters to attack the king repeadtly, and with my mage i casted every offensive spell that i had against him. i think you can also try casting cloudkill repeatedly to trya nd take down a group of enemies, but i've never really tried that myself.

Okay, i beat it (well my brother actually) with nukin them. Have fireball spells, cloudkill spells, cast em. Use ur flaming oil potions and such. Most of em will probably panic, some will die, some will charge. Easy pickings from there. AT first i thought it would be a real chess game.

Yeah, that's what I did. My whole party was Chanted and Hasted, and each was equipped with either a Necklace of Missiles, Wand of Fire, or Oil of Burning. I launched those suckers right at the edge of my Fog of War, paused, and launched a 2nd round. Everybody on the other side was either dead or panicked.
![]() Casting a couple of Webs at the middle of the board before you let loose with the offensive spells wouldn't hurt, either. Web won't make the other guys attack you because it doesn't actually do any damage.

Well, heres my tactic.
First, I cast haste before the battle: Have any Druids cast Entangle Have any clerics cast Hold-Person Have any Magic users case Cloud Kill if avaible, or Fireball if not. Have fighters kill everyone they see with bows. The only piece that survive the inital round are usually the knights, the king, and the queen. Round #2's fireball should kill everyone except the king. And once hes alone, he dies pretty quick. |

Kill the king and you have won! (This is chess, lol!)
When you move any of your characters out of the back row you get zapped with lightning. So have a your tank, buffed up on potions and either hasted or wearing boots of speed, drink a potion of absorption and sic that character on the king. Or perhaps make it a thief and hit the king with a backstab and hope for a critical hit. Kings face each other, but are placed on squares of opposite color to their own--IIRC, you are black and the enemy king is on the 4th square from the upper lefthand corner of the board. I would also try having everyone target the king with bows and wands once your tank or thief exposes him from the fog of war. They'll take some lighting bolts but it will probably be over quicker.
