I just can't figure out what's up with this spell. BG2 Spell description says:
Clairvoyance (Divination) Range: Special Casting Time: 3 Duration: 1 round The Clairvoyance spell empowers the wizard to see in his mind the confines of whatever area he's in This spell does not work indoors, ----------------------------------------------------------------- So, this spell is supposed last for 1 round after you cast it. So, you cast the spell, look at your map, and voila! the whole area is mapped out, just like it's supposed to be. However, it doesn't last for just 1 round, it lasts for the rest of the game (unless it's one of the areas that changes after you complete it, like the Temple Ruins). Second of all, this spell isn't supposed to work indoors. The description says so, however, it can be used in dungeons, and that's indoors. What's up with that? The description in the book doesn't seem like it was finished though. At the end, there is a comma, not a period. So either it was a typo, or they forgot to finish the spell description. This was the BG2 description for the spell. BG1 Description: Clairvoyance (Divination) Range: Special Casting Time: 3 Duration: 1 round The Clairvoyance spell empowers the wizard to see in his mind the confines of whatever area he's in. -------------------------------------------------------------- So, in BG1, it supposed to work everywhere, and it does, just like it works everywhere in BG2. However, it's also supposed to last for just a round in BG1 (like in BG2), however, it's duration stays, it doesn't run out. So the BG1 description says that it should work everywhere, while the BG2 says it should only work outdoors. This however, isn't true, as I already stated. Has anyone noticed this before? The spell isn't supposed to be like it is in the game. [ 11-09-2003, 05:33 PM: Message edited by: Lord ]

actually it does not work everywhere, maybe you have a pre-patched version?
There are some misflagged areas (outdoor flagged as dungeon and indoor flagged as outdoor) but that's about it. If you cast the spell indoors it goes poof:"Spell cannot be cast indoors" (and its unmemorized still, after being a dud). Try casting "Call Lightning". It's an outdoor-only spell too. If it works indoors there's something wrong with your installation. Spell description are not always accurate and I guess they just had to enter something so they put 1 round. But it could also be, that for 1 round you SEE the whole area (i.e. including monsters and without fog of war) and after that you only remember. Maybe it takes you 1 round of concentrating to add the area you see to your map.

Edit: To be honest, I have no idea if I am patched or not. I have ToB installed, so when I tried to install a patch, it said that I don't need it since I have ToB installed. However, I still get the 'Character X Appears Busy' bug, so I have no idea what's going on. [ 11-09-2003, 05:43 PM: Message edited by: Lord ]

You tried installing the SoA patch. You do not have the ToB patch. While you are at it, install the ToB Baldurdash Fixpack. Relevant links can be found in the sticky FAQ.

NPC is busy bug means you are missing the latest (ToB in your case) patch.
For the duration: you can't really say WHAT the spell does for one round. It could be that the spell itself is running for one round but the effect is permanent. Like when you use a spell to create something (e.g. Goodberry). The spell lasts for one round (=casting time + concentration/no-casting-allowed time) but the effect is permanent. Think of it that way: The caster invokes divine powers to imbue him with knowledge of the area around him. As this knowledge only lasts for one round many a wizard will copy it to a map as long as the spell lasts.

I don't wanna be a dick, but you should'nt waste time discussing such a spell... I think its pointless... =P
maybe the game's creators didn't really care about the spell and I don't blame them =PPPP

Personally, this is one of my favourite spells, and if I could afford it, I would have it in my Sorcerer's spell list. A luxury to be sure, but a very nifty luxury.

Fs.SaCul, I put up the topic because to me, it seemed like some sort of bug, either that or I made a mistake. Generally, when you find a bug, you would want to fix it. Even when it's a beneficial bug (like getting unlimited HP), I'd still want that fixed since that takes the point/fun out of the game. If you like that sort of stuff, then it's fine by me. However, I am almost done going through SoA for the first time with a sorceror, so I have been paying much more attention to spells that usual, which is why I realized this. Dundee, why wouldn't you put it in your sorceror list? I don't have it on mine, but I personally like it better than spook. And since you can choose to get emotion at level 4 instead (it's really not so far into the game for you to get to a level 4 spell), it leaves spook as a spell that I don't use anymore. Sure, I used spook at first, but now I don't use it at all. But I do use clairvoyance all the time, mainly because I've mapped the areas so many times that I don't feel like doing it all out again. But I don't use clairvoyance on the more important areas: if I do that, then I might not go to a place that I should have since it's all mapped out now, and I might miss something important. But if it's unmapped, then I'd know to get there. Get my drift? ![]()

Run that by me again, cause I am getting a wee bit confused here. What do Spook (a lvl 1 spell) and Emotion (a lvl 4 spell) have to do with the selection of Clairvoyance (a lvl 3 spell)?
