After enetering level 2 (after defeating Love, Pride and 'em other dudes), I got most of the doors to open, but when I finally, after tons of reloads, got the better of the Dwarwen Doomguards, I decided to go outside for a bit, to cool off, and sell all the gear that I collected this far (except for anything that has "quest item" written on it). When I come back, all the doors are now shut, locked AND barred from the inside ;-(
I would HATE to start from my most previous save which is in the beginning of level 1 and do everything all over again. I am sure you know the feeling...

HEEEEEEEELP!!!

that sucks...the entrance to the two statues should be open so did you try messing with them to open up some of the doors? I guess another thing you can try is to put the wardstones back onto the table or in the desks/nightstand where you found them before and then take them out again and see if any doors open. there is also one of the sparring dummies that opens up the door leading to the room where you got the helmet. Some of the doors can be opened without using any switches but i think you have to have those wardstones on you. I don't know if you've tried doing any of these or if you can even do them at all but thats all i can think of. It took me a while but i was able to pass the same level...i just didn't leave to go outside but i stuffed everything worth keeping or selling into a chest so i can come back and retrieve them and sell them off later. Hope this helps.

I remember hearing of this all the time from other posters when I myself went through Durlag's, but in the few times that I left to sell loot and returned I had no such problems. IIRC it is a bug. I recall reading that sleeping a few times and then picking the lock worked for someone. You could always use the following cheat (if you have cheats enabled):

Cheats:Hans()

teleports you to an adjacent area, in this case the other side of a locked door.

Out of interest guys, I decided to wait to attack the Doomguards (that's the four spirits near the fake stairs right?) I was wondering, apart from the xp, is it worth it? I only ask because I too have to use a rather early save as well.

hmm from what i know of, after you go down to that level, you can't come back up, that's like the point of no return, if you go bac up, then everything gets reset and you gotta start all over again...which really does suck...but i don't think there's nething you can do about it...

Yeah, that's a fun, challenging fight. I can't remember what the XP is for beating them but they're tough, so it must be respectable.

yes totally, i have to agree with that, for me though, it was more of a challenge, i wanted to get to those locked chests in teh room, and it took me a LONG time to defeat the dwaren doom guards, but it was really a good challenge ^^

Cheers everyone! I haven't had time to try everything out yet, hope i'll make it But hey! Why not look at the bright side: If I have to go back to an old save, it will give me hours of extra gaming time...

About those Doomguards: One of my toughests fights in the game. Here's how I managed (and will manage if I have to, again):
SPOILER

Dynaheir: A couple of fireballs into the room until she has to flee. Then magic missiles.
Viconia: Summon animals I, chant, defensive harmony, wand of the heavens ad lib.
Me (thief/mage): Summon monster II, Ring of missiles(?) ad lib.
Coran: arrows of fire/acid/ice/biting ad lib.
Ajantis: Potion of hill giant strength/of heroism.
Shar-Teel: Potion of stone giant strength/of power.

Mean, eh? Only worked on the 7th reload, and the XP are 2000 for each...compare that to the Greater Bassilisk (4000!) you had for breakfast...

Well I did it, and it was a tough fight. The trick again is to summon loads of monsters to keep them busy - though not for long the eat through them - whilst you pound on them and whittle away with arrows/magic.

If you want to know what they have on them...(minor spoiler)

it's sod all! The only things you can get are from the chests in the room they guard (Kiel's room I think). Even then, they're not all that great. Unless of course you want to go beserk with a +3 morningstar.
