I´m stunned that no one in this forum is cursing how hard this guy is. I´we playd the game through counless times with tactics on insane and this fight is the one that still keeps causing me serious troubles.
Some spoilers about Alhoons race and powers ahead. And more spoilers about his companions. Last time I played chp 2 I saved this fight for the last and still he was able to kill my entire party bar PC. (Since I´m trying the druidic Sorc-class I´m quite over powered ![]() So the battle starts with some umber hulks, mind fliers and ulitharids. One death spell and several Carsomyr / Sword of Arvoreen strikes later thers only my party and Alhoon left. He was protected from magical weapons so I took the standard "Keldorn dispell and kill that annoying mage" -routine. No effect what so ewer. Remowe magic just as useless. So I thought that pierce shield or RRoR should help with that (I thought to be spell immunity). To use those you have to see the target. Alhoon had cast shadow door (well that´s what I thought) and was partially invisible. So again I used the standerd "Keldorn cast true sight and kill that annoying mage" -routine just to find out the text box saying spell ineffective=( I tried Glitter dust too with the same result. So in short you have to fight a mage who, -cannot be targetted by direct target spells -have divine MR -immune to dispell by any means -likes to cast ADHW`s -seems to go invisible when likes to -is cheesy so many ways I cannot make a complete list here and is ulitharid with all ulitharid fighting capabilities!!! I did manage to kill him / it just when he was "dimension dooring" away. (How come if the fight take too long some baddies just take a hike like that?) In the end he was all out of offensive spells (didn`t stop his invisibility abilities) and fighting 5 sword spiders (who apparently don´t have magical weapons). And beeing still protected from MW and with fire shield red and blue. So am I missing some too obvious tactic with this dude or does eweryone else just beat him with out any problems? Please feel free to spoil me with any tactics on this one. |

SunRay, False Dawn, and other unndead fighting tactics may help, try thinking of him as a lich first(immune to lvl 1-5 spells) and a nasty Ularithid second and combine tactics, a thief with high detect invis should be useful in this fight (not positive but it would) also look out for Mislead (I haven't played tactics but it would make sense for it to use the same mislead tactics players are so fond of)
so use high level area effect spells, and the undead roasters as per normal.

Him beeing a lich explains a lot. I had Jan in my party and was going to use his detect invis. -ability, but he couldn´t survive long enough. Normal liches are easy since they target summons so eagerly. One nishruu can soften up a lich pretty handsomely
![]() Anyway he´s beeing eaten by a diseased gibberling or some other thingie that likes to gnash bones And what a disapointment the reward was. No loot and puny 10k exp. That guy should be in league with Irenicus. Although IMO he would mop the floor with Jon. |

Ready for a hum-dinger...
MOD SPOILER AHEAD . . . . Imagine you walk into the Illithid's Master Brain chamber and you have to battle the Master Brain, 2 Adamantine Golems, 6 or 7 Umber Hulks, 2 Mind Flayers, Alhoon, and 2 other I don't know whats because they went invisible putting up stoneskins and PFMW's before I could see them. This is a component of the Improved Battles Mod That is the scenerio on insane which I haven't tried yet, just took a peak. I did get through it on core and there were still the Golems, mind flayers, MBrain, Umber Hulks, and Alhoon though he seemed not to put up as many protections, thank Shar.

WOW - unmodded, at core difficulty I never noticed anything especially tricky about him - suppose it's the Tactics [improved mindflayers] mod that does it - interesting... I'll take another look next time (if I ever get the courage to use Tactics

Oh yeah. That Improved Battles mod. Well, in the MAster Brain component, you get some Magic Golems, and 1 Alhoon at Core, and 1 extra Alhoon for every difficulty level afterwards. Not to mention quite a bit of other goodies. It's certainly not undoable by any means if you did most of the chapter 2/3 side-quests.

I've recently become totally invincible, my saving throws must be incredibly low (i'm at level 48, i took the xp cap off ages ago), so this fight was just a case of standing in the room and waiting for their spell protections to wear off. I think I might have to start a new game.

Mages generally have it easy against Alhoon( assuming Tactics + Insane Difficulty). PfMagical Weapons + Mordenkainen's Swords are the main spells that will make any Mind Flayer cry. More so since Alhoon has an unusual aversion to using Death Spell. His loss, your gain.

Oooohh. But ofcourse. I was too anxious to summon those swords and they got roasted with ADHW:s along with the rest of my party
![]() Just think the frustration when Alhoon was standing there in the middle of all my summons and not taking any damage. Same time PC (sorc.), Aerie, Kelsey and Jan scratching their heads and thinking what would be the next wasted spell With this party not many fights last more than 1 round and then this guy out of nowhere is toasting my party while I´m unable to even dispell his invisibily. |
