When NPC's join your party

When NPC join your party, how are the starting xp points worked out? Valygar joined me near the start with 800000 xp and 2 full quests later Edwin joined and he only had 400000 xp ? do these numbers ever vary? is it a ratio?

Wellard,

NPCs join at a similar level to your character - Valygar with 800,00 XP would be level 10, while Edwin with 400,000 XP would be level 11.

It varies with the classes they have I think.

There are a few versions of each NPC in the game data. The first time an NPC joins, the game goes "which one of these versions is closest to the PC?" and then uses that one for the NPC in the game.

A further query alomg those lines :

I just met Keldorn for the first time, and when he asked to join I told him No - not at this time. He said he would be in the Radiant Heart if I changed my mind. Now I am having too much fun with Korgan as my main tank, and the balance gets thrown about if I drop anybody else. I have heard about a certain sword that I need Keldorn to wield, and was about to have second thoughts and go pick him up to get some levels into him. From what I am reading above though, if I came back roughly 2-3 levels higher later in thegame, Keldorn will already be 2-3 levels higher.

Just want to confirm that his stats rougly match your party's leader WHEN HE FIRST JOINS and not WHEN THEY FIRST MEET AND TALK. That is pretty important to me - because I will stick with Korgan for now if I can
