This has been bugging me for quite a while, though ive never bothered asking since in the end they always fall in the hands of my party. now that im playing solo cleric/mage(starting to get boring, and im only 14/13 leveled) and im just wondering, why at some point all spells get the "spell ineffective" thingie, while at some point spells work just fine. I can probaply kill all liches in the game with my IMoD+2 and a few buffs, but id just like to know why this happens.

Thanks in advance

Two possible reasons.

1) The main one is that Liches are immuned to spells that are of level 5 and below. So casting a Magic Missile on them has no effect.

2) It had a Spell Immunity active, and your spell happens to be the school that it chose to be immuned to.

Hmm.. Liches are immune to lvl1-5 spells AFAIK. And they may put on some buffs like Spell Trap/Deflection/Turning/Shield/etc which absorbs the spell. IMHO the message in log window for such absorptions is "Spell Ineffective". Try to dispell his anti-magic shields first and see what happens. But make sure to use high-level spells due to their immunity.

that explains it. i tried using fire arrow on the shade lich when he first appeared to make sure he just didnt cast some protections right away. now another question comes to mind; why in the nine hells do they cast globe of invulnerability through spell sequencer(or contingency)?!

Real Answer: Stupid AI - there's no reason whatsoever for a Lich to cast GoI.

In-Game Answer: Funky animation.

That's strange because I'm pretty sure that I have been able to hurt liches using Sunfire, which is only level 5. I noticed Fireballs never did anything, but Sunfire always did (except vs. demi-liches).
