How come a sorcerer/mage can't use shields Armor is understandable, but why not a shield They can even drop the thing while fighting, so whats the problem

Well, if they are to drop it while fighting, then why would they want to use Shields in the first place.
I understand why you're asking, though, but I think this is more of a general 2nd Ed.-question, not only limited to BG2.

Well, the shields have straps on the back through which you stick your arm, thus your hand would still be functional when chanting.

And its just because for once I would like to race through beholder lairs in 3 min. like the fighters do with the shield of Balduran, instead of micromanaging 1 sword spider and 3 skeleton warriors.

P.S. No, the Cloak of Cheese is not an option

Umm, out of curiousity why not use the cloak, even if only for the beholders. it would work more or less the same way as the shield of balduran

Come to think of it, I do!

I must sound insane. I guess its just a matter of principles. You see, when I first solo'ed as a sorcerer (first wizard for that matter) I was in a world of pain. Then after Sauhagin City, things seemed to brighten up, you know? Bosses weren't so tough anymore, liches and demi-liches were inferior, the cowled ones were annoying rather then challenging. And then I even noticed that I could destroy all magic-using foes without doing anything at all!

Thats when I learned about the cloak of cheese (pre-ToB that is). So I never wanna touch that rag again U see?

if you have a single level of fighter... wait, that's not possible.
if you have two levels of fighter, you can use shields and cast spells easily.

Eh correct me if I'm wrong but how in BG2 can a Sorcerer get levels of any other class including fighter. I think your refering to 3rd edition rules but BG2 uses 2nd edition rules so it ain't possible.
