my sister's DVD player is hooked up to her HD TV. The last time we tried to play a movie pretty much the whole thing was pink, like "melt your eyes" pink. The video output on the DVD player is uses RCA type cables, but it uses the three cables instead of the old 1 video cable.
My dad was experimenting this weekend and pulled out each cable individually to check the results, removing one of the outer cables reduced it to monochrome, he put that one back, pulled the middle cable and nothing changed. He pulled the last cable and then there was no image at all. His theory is that the middle cable is damaged. what are your thoughts? And if he's right can they be replaced with run of the mill RCA cables or do they have to be a specific type?

Those sound like Component Video cables. There is one red, blue and green, right?
You also need the white and red RCA audio cables with those; which do not affect your video though. I would try using the coaxial, s-video or HDMI video outputs to your DVD to the TV, to see if those work. It will tell you a lot. If it is the comp. cable, buy one in the bargain bin somewhere. They're all the same. Also, make sure you have the correct video input selected on the TV, but it sounds like you have the right one. Take a close look at the connectors on the cables, DVD and TV input to see if there is obvious damage. |

Well it's a standard DVD player, so no HDMI. just RGB video cables.
Which I swapped out to no effect. So it's either the TV or the DVD player, and the TV is displaying the cable signal perfectly. So my next best guess is the DVD player's video output.

Is there another HDTV the suspect DVD player can be hooked up to?

Well, I'm probably gonna try it on the input that the cable box is using, first. If there's no change, then I'll test it on another tv. If it doesn't work on another TV, then it's unlikely to be anything other than the player. It could be that both TV's inputs are bad, but what are the odds?
