Default Basement utility window and worms.

Fellow members I ask of thee:

How does one deter the embarkation of common ground worms through the rough seal of a 12" x 26" *removable* utility window?

First most importantly: It is an enclosed basement with a tight 90* stairwell. This utility window provides the only means of long item access into the basement. All of the framing lumber, carpet, flooring etc..were brought in through the window. It is a must that the window remain removable. The degree of access versus the degree of worm deterrent must equal.

Set-up; steel encased frame embedded within solid poured cement foundation walls. Window slips into a channel within the frame and provides 1/4" x 4 sides of support. The top slides into position last, and has two spring clips that secure window into the channel. The bottom has a rudimentary felt liner, no other sides have any sort of seal. Thou the window seals well enough for the climate.

Worms; I prefer nature over chemical ingenuity, therefore worms, grubs, weeds, birds, porch cats, and the occasional snake are welcome at my place.

Exterior; I have dug a trench 8" wide by several feet in length in front of the window. It is lined with weed guard, and backfilled with 2" of standard crushed marble stone. This leaves a 2" border from ground grade to window base (just bare exterior cement foundation).

Intruders (this has been a wet year); the worms traverse the rock, climb the wall slither between the bottom seal and the window and gain access into the interior. At this point they are strained and usually make it three to four feet before they are completely drained of their life blood and dry out either on the wall, or the carpet in the vicinity of the window.

I'm open to suggestions for deterrence of access entrance, not chemical control. Main priority is continued accessibility of utility window.

Natural solution? Spread birdseed on the ground in that area. Once the birds start feeding there I'd think they would take care of your problem naturally. The Garden Helper lists several nonchemical solutions for a similar problem battling slugs & snails. Maybe they'll work for you?

Mmmm, reminds me of a book we read in elementary school. "How to Eat Fried Worms" I forget who the author is though.
