Sad Majel Roddenberry, RIP

Quote:
LOS ANGELES - Majel Barrett Roddenberry, "Star Trek" creator Gene
Roddenberry's widow who nurtured the legacy of the seminal science
fiction TV series after his death, has died. She was 76. Roddenberry
died of leukemia Thursday morning at her home in Bel-Air.

She also was the executive producer for two other TV science fiction
series, "Andromeda" and "Earth: Final Conflict."
To my knowledge, she appeared in every Star Trek series and movie in some fashion.

Oh wow.. I knew she was getting up there. She was the main computer voice on TNG, some of DS9 (the federation computers not the cardassians, and Voyager). I thought she did a great job with it... But towards the end of Voyager, you could tell the 'computer's voice' sounded much older and strained.. She'll be missed.

I just heard this too. It's sad and feels like another 'old friend' from all those shows is gone. Amazing how we get used to things like that- a computer voice!

OMG I knew her only by the voice, and always thought it was great that she carried on with the franchise through the voice-acting. Nothing can replace the "computer" voice, it won't be the same without her (the Cardassian voice on DS9 sounds terrible).

Didn't know this but she played Lwaxana Troi all this time! Had no clue it was her, and yeah, thinking back to Troi's crazy mother, the voices are the same as the computer. Just shows how you can know someone so well by sound, but not sight!

I couldn't put a face to the name until I read that she was Nurse Chapel in the original ST.

I remember in the last Voyager episode--when Voyager came home---and the future Janeway took the item from the Klingon's to make the subspace bridge or whatever to the past Voyager, Janeway said "Computer, Deploy Armor" (The new Ablative Armor generators the future ships had was AWESOME--tanks today use it btw).. anyway, the computer sounded old.. sad hearing that. You always want them to live forever.. Well, they will, on TV and our hearts/minds....

BTW... This means CURRENT Starfleet now has Ablative Armor generators and transphasic torpedoes. (1 shot at a Borg Cube destoryed it!) nice tech to get early.. the temperal police probably would have come in and taken it tho, eh?

Yup and yup,

I actually liked her character. She was annoying most of the time, but when she had her caring moments, it made some of the best parts of the shows.
Like when she removed her wig for Odo, then arranged her dress for him to revert to his gelatinous form: a very touching moment for me.

..where have the years gone...

Well, this is one of many alternate federation timelines. She may sound old in Endgame, but she had to look better than "old Janeway" does, with that terrible wig! In this timeline, Starfleet also has stealth technology (cloaks) as well as the ablative hull armor. According to the TNG alternate timelines, starfleet can go speeds of Warp 17 and upward, by this time, yet in Endgame they cannot. Thing is, as far as the producers go, these are all considered possible outcomes but not actual cannon in the trek universe. Just look at how many times the federation com badge changes its design.
