I read in a news article today that test were starting to prove that a red-headed person requires 20% more dmediacal drugs that are used in such cases as operations to be put to sleep or relaxed during the ordeal. I knew that red-heads were chemically different than others, but I cannot remember the facts about how so. This is a very interesting find!

Really remind me not to shoot any tranquilizer darts at a redhead. I didn't know they were chemically different at all. News to me...

i can attest to this, as i am a red head. codiene does ntohign for me, it takes a lot of ibuprofen to kill a headache for me and it takes forever for novacain to take effect. also red head are harder to stick, as in drawing blood and such. we are unique creatures. also the gene for red hair is not on the same chromosome as other hair color genes.

Sorry I left out the link. here it is
Quote:
The theory hinges on melanin, a pigment responsible for skin and hair color.

The sun triggers a hormone that in turn triggers the production of melanin to form a tan. Redheads seldom tan easily because they have a defective receptor for that hormone -- a quirk with this "melanocortin-1 receptor" that also leaves their hair red. Without its intended receptor to dock in, the melanin-producing hormone may cross-react with a related receptor on brain cells that influences pain sensitivity, Sessler explained.

That's still a theory. Here's what Sessler can say for certain: He and colleagues gave 10 healthy women with naturally red hair and 10 with dark hair the common inhaled anesthetic desflurane. Then they administered electric shocks -- not enough to do damage but enough to cause pain -- and inched the desflurane dose up or down according to the pain response until each patient was judged to be at the optimum anesthetic dose. The redheads required a 20 percent higher dose.

Sessler said his lab first tested a few blondes and found they reacted the same as brunettes. That was expected since only redheads have the melanocortin-1 defect.

The study doesn't address if men would react similarly -- there are gender differences for many drugs -- or if redheads would be similarly affected by non-inhaled types of anesthesia.

My cousin is a red-head, and she's certainly different genetically speaking.

She has 4 kidneys, and they all function. If I remember correctly, she has two "in-line" on both the left and right sides.

Actually I've asked her that.

She says they can't be donated. I'm sure I'm not explaining it exactly right, but by working in-line, they are dependant on one another, so she needs them all. Taking out one would disable it's partner.

Thank god for hair dye Iīm now more of a brunette lol. But Iīve never had this problem since I tan very easily, WHEW *wipes her forehead*. I do know that some people donīt respond to codein but have no clue if this is pigment induced lol. But Ronn, I still donīt get why your friend canīt donate kidneys. I can understand why she wouldnīt be allowed (if thatīs the case). But kidneys work separately from eachother, that is if one functions thatīs enough. Ah well, not my area of anatomy lol. I prefer to work a tad higher up on the body

Well, as long as they're not gonna turn me into a labrat, I'm cool with it. Makes you proud to be a redhead.
