I'm sure someone has tried this--or maybe not.
What would happen if you dropped Imoen from the party in the opening section? Or if Imoen got killed? Lerf |

Imoen can't die--her belt prevents this. If she gets down to really low hitpoints, she drops whatever she was carrying, and runs off (so....she knows where the exit is? Gee, thanks for sharing that detail with the rest of the group).
If she runs off, or is booted, in the dungeon, she'll still be there when it's Irenicus vs. the Shadow Thieves.

It's just a devicethe programmers used to prevent the untimely death of Imoen in Chapter 1. Imagine what would happen if Imoen was actually killed even before you left the starting dungeon - that would complicate the plot terribly, to put it mildly.

Imoen CAN be killed. Of course, her belt protects her from any kind of death, but put Skull of Death on her (via console or ShadowKeeper - helm17) and she should die. I'm not sure why, though.
Another interesting thing is: after exiting, she starts casting Magic Missiles. But, I had all her slots filled with Chromatic Orbs!! Pathetic...
