We're having an official Dungeon Craft 'themed' design contest. The winning design will be included in the default package as the official Dungeon Craft design.
The theme for the design contest is "A Village in the Woods". Interpret this as you feel is appropriate. The rules are pretty straight-forward. 1. Must use default art, but may add your own art as needed. 2. Resolution for the design must be 640x480, which is the default resolution for Dungeon Craft. 3. Must be a fantasy setting. You may choose to set it in the Forgotten Realms (a Dungeons & Dragons world), but you aren't required to do so. 4. Must make use of at least one of each of the following events, in whatever form the author thinks is applicable: text statement, shop, temple, transfer (stairs, teleporter, or transfer module), combat, encounter, logic block, tavern, who tries, who pays, training hall, vault, special item, question list, and question yes/no. 5. Don't be offensive, we would like this to be playable for ages 13 and up. 6. Artwork used that is not part of the default art base must be original or explicitly allowed for use. In this case, explicit means that you either have personal permission from the artist, or a published statement that says the art may be used, eg. art released under GPL. Just finding some art on a website is not good enough. This is for the official DC design, so we don't want any future issues over copyright. 7. Maximum size for the design is 4 MB (zipped). Tip: use .png format for graphics for the smallest size and avoid using .mp3s. The judges for the design contest are the current Dungeon Craft project Administrators, Tarlanon and manikus. The contest starts today, April 3rd, 2008 and runs until August 2nd, 2008 at noon Pacific Daylight Savings Time. All entries should be mailed to manikus5@yahoo.com. I will send a quick reply to let you know I've received your entry. The winning entry will be included with the next release of Dungeon Craft after the end of the contest. The design will also be hosted at SourceForge.net as a separate download for people who just want to play a good game. If you have any questions, please ask. You may use any of the locations where this notice is posted, as well as the Open Forums at SourceForge.net, https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=4978, or by emailing me directly a the above email. Just a question, how much of the default art do you think is necessary? To be honest, I don't really find many of the default backgrounds useful: the green sky one is sorta weird unless the adventure takes place in a mutant dimension, the pink sky one doesn't seem to match the higher res default walls and backgrounds (basically it would match vanilla FRUA art, but not higher res or colour ones), and the purple night sky one is actually nice but it lacks daytime equivalent. I tried using custom art backgrounds, but then the default walls didn't match, and so on... (Sorry to be picky about this)

I don't know how Tarlanon feels about this, but Im more concerned about people using all of the events and stuff on the techncal side.
![]() I don't know if you've downloaded and/or looked at the 1024x768 default art, but there is a bit of a divergence in the official default art, namely the walls and backgrounds. It may be that Ziroc's backgrounds will be supplemented with 640x480 versions of the higher res set. To use either the backgrounds or walls, you just need to scale them to 50% and they are good to go. ![]() To state it more clearly, using the default art does not mean using every single piece of the default art set. ![]() This was a really good question, Jadefang. Thanks for asking and I look forward to seeing your entry. |

I agree with Manikus on this. The designers should use as much of the default art as they deem appropriate for their designs, but by no means are they 'locked in'.

Another question, should I asssume that certain game bugs will get fixed in the next release, so using those curently bugged features will be okay? (i.e. including a battle with undead, whose immunity to death magic makes them immortal, and turning them will make them run away and crash the game if they successfully flee combat)

This bug is also why there is no morale, due to the fact that if any creature tries to flee off the map it locks into a loop when that creature successfully leaves. After playing around with various status codes I suggested a means to deal with this (change status to 2 for dead or even (IIRC) 4 for "temp gone")
No idea tho when the next release is or what bugfixes it has. But, hopefully it doesn't require a huge reworking of the code. ST
