Lemme see.. I was playing a Mage, level 5, and I went through the Tower.. Couldn't get very far, for one, since Imoen couldn't disarm the traps. Now I started over with a Elven Thief, and I'm just wondering when I should attempt the Tower.

I'd say at least Lv. 6, though Lv. 7 would probably be even better. I just went there today with my level 5 party and I had trouble even getting in. I would try my first time at Lv. 6 but if you have trouble, go back at level 7.

BTW, Find/Remove Traps is the most important thief skill in the game, IMO. Get that up high very early on so that you won't have to go around leveling up trying to get your Find/Remove Traps skill on your thief, believe me, it's a pain.

Yes, I agree with Jafin. Make sure every one of your party members are at least 6th level and the thieving ability to Find/Remove traps is absolutely essential in Durlag's Tower. However, don't be surprised if there are certain ones, regardless if you're thief has 100% in F/R traps that will go off anyway! You'll see.

Well, I plan on making my Elven Thief into an Assassin when I switch to BG2, so Stealth is the most important factor. I will probably max Imeon out with Find/Remove Traps, and my character with Stealth. My thief would make a perfect Assassin, she already has a THAC0 of 16, at level 1! I'm pretty sure that is what Kivan gets when you first find him.

Nanobyte, when you import your character in BG2 you will have to re-distrubute all ability scores again, so it doesnt matter if you max him in stealth or find traps in BG1.

I was at level 8 with most of my characters, and I still found it VERY chalanging.
So, load up with a Wand of Monster Summoning or five before you take it on

You really wanna do it in one go. So you need a really good thief for the obscene number of traps in the tower.

You'll face:

Monster spoilers:

Air Aspect (very tough wyvern)
3x Greater Wyverns(not as tough as above)
LOTS of Greater Dopplegangers
new phase spiders (teleport at will)
invisble stalkers
sirines
greater ghouls (huge HP)
some tough dwarven doomguards

and... the final baddie!
