Okay - what's the trick here? I can kill the leprechaun but that doesn't seem to give my thief credit for the quest. So how do I catch the leprechaun and find his treasure?

No idea, I killed him got insane high exp for that (like Guardian of Isis + 3-headed hydra) and got Laprechaun staff. Anyway thief in guild is somehow bugged, so I have highest credit already. Every time I enter thief guild my assasin gets 2500 exp for killing that snake-human assasin. I tried every possible spell to stop him, binding force, sleep, slow, freeze, no effect.
