I've made a Elven Wizard 1/Rogue 3 and plan to make him an Arcane Archer later on....
Rogue's can 'fake' cast spells, but does that mean i didn't need to take the one class in wizard? I just found it annoying that i had to waste one level on a class that i will never improve!

No, it is not a waste. Although Rogues can cast spells from scrolls and wands it does not qualify them as arcane spellcasters for the purpose of becoming an Arcane Archer. Only Wizards, Sorcerors and Bards meet the qualifications.

Best bet to build for an Arcane Archer is Bard. They qualify, as mentioned, by having arcane spells, and get some rogue skills as class skills anyway. Then if you wanted to take another class later, you'd still have it open. You can't overlook the bard song as a good buff either, plus a higher base lore skill, due to bardic knowledge. Just don't forget to put some points in perform.
