I have gottren stuck under the stairs two times in the sunken city , this is stupid...is there no crouch button or something short of reloading a previous game to get out of this posistion......I was just opening a chest.

The most common way to get stuck is switching from a smaller character to a larger one. Try switching to your smallest character (pixie for example); you should be able to wiggle free again.
Otherwise you can always try the high level moon spells teleport and vanish to get free. |

Try looking down and going "forward". That is as close to a crouch that I found.
