Okay, so I've heard people saying up and down that you can cast spells through Elven Chainmail, such as the type Drizzt wears. Gotta try this for myself, I said. So I send in my Human Fighter->Conjurer to try to cast a Mage spell or two while wearing the fancy stuff. No dice. My Rangers can Stealth while wering the stuff, but I don't know if they can cast Druid spells through it. Can't Rangers cast no matter what they're wearing, like Clerics can? What's the deal here?

Fighter clerics can cast spells with any armor, so do rangers. About Drizzts chain mail, it allows stealth (for a ranger or fighter/thief) but it doesnt allow mage spellcasting (it would rock TOO MUCH )

I don't think so....Drizzt's mail disallows all other magic AC items like Rings & Amulets of Protection, so it pretty much sets your AC to 0, right? I believe that exactly what you have with an Archmagi Robe and a Ring of Protection +2, so for a Fighter/Mage, Drizzt's mail would be more like a free Archmagi Robe than anything else--NOT a big bonus for your player, especially when you consider you can't wear stuff to lower your saving throws. Seems to me like the only thing good about the mail is its Stealth properties....maybe I'll have Coran toggle between the Ankheg & Drizzt armors instead of the Ankheg & Shadow.

I have a multiclass cleric-thief that I converted to a half-elf via an editor (btw, he is actually less powerful for detecting traps and picking locks than a gnome). He is able to cast cleric spells and perform all his thieving abilities in that Mithril chain mail. (Just thought of this, but perhaps my character having elven blood is a factor here?... Nah.)

Drizzts armor has an AC of 1
Robe of archmagi has an AC of 5, which with a ring +2 is a total of AC 3, plus the 5% of magic resistance and the +2 bonus to all saving throws that the ring provides.

It would be a hard choice, i think it would depend on what kind of characters do you have in your party, but anyway drizzts chain mail doesnt allow mage spellcasting, so...

Yeah....looks like it's just yet another set of "Not-Quite-Full-Plate," along with the Ankheg Armor and the Plate & Full Plate +1s. I know having 6 sets of normal Full Plate in the game would result in everybody's party wearing exactly the same thing, but it just seems really strange to me that enchanted armor is more common than non-enchanted.
The weird thing is, I've heard quite a few people talk about Drizzt's armor, and how great it is because you can cast spells through it. Were those people smoking something, or did they just use Gatekeeper or something to hack the item? Or they may have confused it with Elven Chainmail, which (as far as I know) DOES allow mage spellcasting.
Well, looks like Drizzt's mail is nothing really special, except that it's great for Fighter/Thieves. But still, I'd rather just alternate between the Ankheg and Shadow Armors.....better to give up an Inventory slot than put another 15% into Stealth.

Trust me, it is everything I said for a cleric-thief (either a gnome or whatever race you might want to hack for that multiclass). It gives substantially lower AC than the best enchanted studded leather. And you can perform the full array of spellcasting and thieving abilities. For any other class, I cannot say. But it is superb armor for a cleric-thief.
