OK, I'm 3 years late. I've done Diablo, D2, D2:LOD, and NWN before I even opened the box. OK, I forgot I had BG2. People refer to it often, so this weekend I loaded it up and rolled up a few newbie characters. Then I tried to hit the MPlayer (multiplayer?) option.

Reaction #1: This is no where NEAR the connectivity of NWN or D2: this is a PITA. But it has great reviews, so lets keep going.

Reaction #2: There are SIX games in all of gamespy to join And the game won't let me join any of them because I use a router?

OK...I know I must be doing something wrong here...

BG2s multiplayer is weak. Also, its the kind of game that to play properly you want a group of people that can get together semi regularly. You dont want to wind up playing with a bunch of Imoen's-belt-wearing edjits. No fun that way.

Best way to do it is to arrange a match with people you know.

On the router, it wont stop you joining a game. A firewall might, look through the readme and see which ports you have to open, but it shouldnt be that complicated.

To host a game behind a router, you need to setup port forwarding, theres a thread by Ziroc in general conversation on doing that for NWN, BG2 is similar.

But BG2 is a single player game, I always enjoy single player far more than even muliplay across my LAN.

BG2 multiplayer games didnt really seem that good to me either. the party members ive picked up from the internet, lets see

1. a Jon Irenicus looking dude who throws instant killing energy blades
2. a hula wizard(Lavok)casting rapture of the father on anything that moves
3. a shadow thief with the easter egg version of the Varscona

that was it for me, i stopped there with random multiplayer pickings. i played to underdark with a friend using a split party of six, but to really enjoy bg2 mp you would propably have to have a party with each member controlling a single character. excuse any typos, its getting late here in finland.

When i first got Bg 2, i wanted to play online. i had just gotten done with the whole diablo series, so i was expecting some sort of Battle.net like that.. but it was crap. it said i had to pay to use it and stuff.. so i just played single player. now sometimes, i link up using IP addresses with my friends and we just mess around. usually ill just import my char from my current game and we just go on rampages thru the cities..killing cowlies, controling peopleing then make the city into a statue park (flesh to stone baby ), disintegrating animals.. just the usual

Its really a lot of fun though. but when i do that (which i rarely do) i just play single player. Playing with NPCs is almost as fun as with real people; they will do what i say but they dont have minds of their own.
