A better way to get more traps is to go to Records (where your stats are shown) - click on dual-class, as though you are going to dual-class your thief, then click cancel....you'll get your traps...

1) Got Yoshi to set about 6 traps where the lich comes up from the ground - when he does this nearly killed him in one go
2) Hammered him with arrows etc...
