I rebooted my computer and this behaviour went away. Very strange though. Finished the game today without it reoccuring. Interesting. At least it is gone now it seems.

The only thing I can think of that has actually changed is that I use the upgraded circlet with extra 7th and 8th level spells now. No strange known side effect from that either?
