If you level up in skills which are governed by a stat, you might gain multipliers:
example: you level 4 points in marksman (agility) -> when you level up you will be able to raise your agility by 4/2=2 points instead of only one you would get without the multiplier.
So, try to increase skills related to at least 3 different stats before leveling up, so that you will get multipliers.

Also, patch the game to the latest version, so that misc skills can give yo multipliers as well (oldest version give you none)
All true - and since I'm obsessive about these things, once I decide the type of character I'm going to play I try to select skills that cover a nice range of attributes, and at least 2 from each of the other areas (so my mage will likely have 2 major/minor skills in stealth and combat). This allows you to get those wonderful multipliers a lot more often, and you level up more quickly early in the game.

Of course, my characters also steal anything that isn't nailed down (and some that is ) no matter their class, so I can keep on purchasing training. You can advance quite a few levels without leaving Balmora if you keep yourself funded and check *everywhere* in town for people who can train you.

Learning to train or advance in three areas before you level up to get those multipliers quickly becomes second nature.
