BG1 is definitely worth it and you can still buy it online. You're in England?
Amazon.co.uk carries it.
Of course the game preceded BG2 so expect lesser graphics and gameplay options, but as you say it's great for getting to know many of the BG2 characters and getting more background info that enhances the storyline of BG2.
