I think Star Wars is better, not because of the technology involved (judge this on the era it was developed) but because of the impact on society each film had.

LOTR didn't even come close to having the impact the original SW did - did LOTR stay in the box office for years at a time? NO - but Star Wars did!

If you prorate the box office rate of the old SW films, and compare them to todays I think you'll find that Star Wars far outgrosses current releases in total number of viewers.
