I remember that speach from my high school Auto shop classes, they had a gutter below the floor line to catch gas fumes and channel them outside and the most interesting part to me was that lighting a match in the gutter would not work because there usually wasn't enough O2 present to ignite, let alone catch the fumes, however if you dropped a match into it it would ignite the fumes as it passed through the correct air/fuel mixture and there would be... problems.
