It came out about the time that Colonization came out... maybe slightly before. It was the earliest version of Stronghold, I believe, though with a different name.
It was a D&D game and in each territory of the map you could only build certain types of troops ie Dwaves, Elves, Orcs, ect. You started the game with 5 heroes,a fighter, dwarf, elf, magic user and something else. You started the game and sent the heroes on Quests to try to obtain magic items. The higher the level the quest, the more powerful the magic item MIGHT be brought back. There was no gaurantee that your hero would bring one back. He might also be killed on the quest, which was a good reason to save at the end of every turn so that if your hero got killed you could reload and see if hed survive at the start of the following turn. Survive and bring back a magic item. The higher the level of quest you chose would determine the level of the magic item found (if he found one at all) and then the hero would go up in level enabling him to go on tougher quests. Heres another clue, one of the most powerful magic items in the game was called the Mirror of Life Trapping. It had 5 chances of trapping an enemy heroes soul in the mirror. There was no defense against it. You just had to make sure that before you used it there WAS a hero in the territory to indeed be trapped and thus removed from the game. There was also a magic item that let you view the enemy territory. It would give hard numbers on enemy troops and class/level of the heroes inside that territory. Very handy when used in conjunction with the Mirror Of Life Trapping. By removing the enemies heroes it made invading the territory much easier. One of the neat things about this game was it was really based on siege warfare. If you tried to take the territory you needed a MAGIC USER or a BATTERING RAM to blast down the gates of the enemy castle. Catapults could be used to knock down the walls. Once you created an opening your troops would swarm into the enemy castle killing anything in sight. You could also get ballista to hit the enemy troops while your other troops pounded anything they could hit. Heroes in combat were a must. IF you had a fighter in your army the fighter troops would fight at the level of the hero---- I think!!! you could also use the hero to tell HIS type of troops to "attack my target" Dwarven troops would then attack the target of the Dwarven hero. Something like that. ITs been a long time so I cant remember all the details. Does this ring a bell to anyone??? If so, PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THIS GAME I havent played this game in ages and Id love to have a go at it... if I can find it, which of course will be very difficult if I dont get the name |

I did a search and found what looks to be a box cover for it. Unfortunately the box of the game looks more like a Gandolf type mage looking guy holding an orb (either red or blue, I cant remember) in his had.
The gam you mentioned seems to have many of the features of the one I was talking about but the game Im looking for is alot older. I think it was made some time between '92 and '95. Close but no cigar. Your reply was very much appreciated and may just have put me on the right track |
If the cover art shows a Red Wizard, I believe the game was called Fantasy Empires.
