Everytime some pansy mage attacks my group they alway cast mirror-image on themselves. What good is it. You can still tell which ones real, and easily kill him, does it do anything of importance? it confuses me when they do it and it just makes me want to kill them more!

You can still attack the mage but whenever you hit him/her, one of the mirror images disappear. Bassicaly when a mage casts it, you have to hit that mage as often as he has images of himself before you can actually do damage. It's actually one of the best defensive spells a mage has in BG.

YOU may still be able to tell which image is real, but your character can't, if you understand my meaning. In BG1/TotSC, as long as so much as one fake image is still there, the real one can't be hit by melee or missile weapons. Not sure about spells, but Mirror Image certainly isn't useless. It's IMHO the best defensive spell in the game. Things are different in SoA/ToB of course, but that's another story.

Not to mention the fact that a mage can walk through a lot of traps while mirror imaged without getting damage -> great for soloing

It is a good defensive spell to use, it means your mage cant have his/her spells interupted by being attacked, and it also means that the enemy cant make a successful meelee attack for a while.

A good way of getting rid of it is using magic missile, because each ball dispells one image.

I agree with what Scholarcs is saying. If ever I see an enemy mage cast Mirror Image on himself, I immediately attack with Magic Missiles to kill the images, before he can cast his next spell, which is usually something nasty. I also found that a simple spell like Command Word can knock over an enemy mage for just enough time to allow my archers to get rid of his mirror images. It's kind of fun to see a row of mages lying down for a rest! I also remember having a good laugh when someone tried to cast Lighting Bolt on my mirrored Mage - the rebounds took down 2 or 3 of my images but the enemy killed himself - c'est le vie!

One thing I did quite a lot with Garrick (the useless Bard) was to remove his armour, cast Mirror Image and then put his armour back on. This way he stayed alive long enough to contribute something to the battle.

Does anyone know if there is a list of which spells hit the images as opposed to those that ignore the images and effect the spellcaster? It would be quite helpful to know this.

I don't know if there's a list, but from my experience spells that do direct damage like Magic Missile, Flame Arrow etc. hit the images first and non-damaging spells like Charm, Polymorph Other and the like ignore the images. Non-hostile spells (Haste, Polymorph Self et al) also ignore the images. Only I'm not quite certain about area-effect damage spells like Fireball or Cloud Kill, but I think those bypass the images. At least that would be logical.

I keep forgetting if Fireball will hurt the central Mage or not--actually, my #1 spell against Mirror Image is Dispel Magic.

"Davaeorn? Who.....who's Davaeorn?"

I think fireball doesnt affect the mage, but it does affect the images. But I am not sure, will have to try it out. I think the mage loses one image for each successful attack by the fireball (save vs. spells for half) so it is either losing 1 or 2 images.
But I am not completely sure, check it out.
