This is the first time that I've gone into the Mind Flayer lair that is down in the sewers. For some bizarre reason I'm doing this before going to the Underdark and all my characters are lvl 8-10. What gets me is that there are more of them here than there are in the Underdark. Just how many of these pains in the posterior are there? After slowly clearing out the first room I just strolled in to the second one. Now before I reload, just what have I gotten myself into?

SPOILER

The second Mind Flayer city. You want the Crom Faer(sp), dont you?

I know I can't "put it together" until I come back but thought that I would at least get all the pieces this time around. I know that I don't have to fight them now as well but..... I was in the neighborhood. :D

there are three rooms, in the last room you fight the same thing you did in the second room, namely 1 or 2 umber hulks, 4 mind flayers, and 4 ulithids. IN the middle of the room is the stash which explains what they're doing in the sewers, and also one of the pieces in the crom fayr recipe.

traps...all the time. Without traps, you're dead. Set 4, rest, set 4, rest...you cant be woken up in the sewers, so basically, keep the doors closed until you have a hefty amount of traps there. And you get what amounts to be free exp.

You're trying this with characters of level 8-10? You're a braver man than I am. Just do it later with more experienced characters - it's a tough fight.

The first time I did this encounter, I did it right after Big Red, probably much like you are doing (since then, I've learned to wait on doing this, so there's some advice for ya as well ).

I tended to rely heavily on Magic & Summons, though, to make it through (finally, after, many Reloads).

The first room can be dealt with somewhat cheesily (though justifiable cheese ). Ok, you know there's lots of people, but... you could convince yourself it's a reasonable tactic to send in 2-3 Fireballs as soon as you see the first red circle, right? After all, your characters are smart - it's not gonna be just one Fighter against you after that mental attack while approaching, right? Also, it wouldn't be unreasonable to make a few of your Fighter-types Invisible beforehand, who could then head straight to the Mind Flayer (slightly behind the blast radius of course). Once that MF (I mean Mind Flayer by that, naturally!) is taken care of, the rest are pretty simple.

After that, you have a long corridor leading to another room. It's not inconceivable that your characters would now suspect multiple Flayers. What better way to counteract the Flayers than to summon 3-4 monsters, have an (Improved) Invisible character open the next door, then snipe away with missile fire while those MF's (& their Umber Hulk servants) eat your minions. Keep summoning while the carnage is going on, & do strategic withdrawals towards the first room as more bad guys appear.

Finally, once that 2nd room is clear, gather all your people in there & repeat your tactics on the 3rd room, though using more buffs here if possible (& making sure your Summons benefit from them as well). Open the northern door, cast Summons into the corridor, then send an (Improved) Invisible character to open the next northern door (make sure you see & lure a few of the enemies). Let your summons clog up the corridor while you snipe once more from the 2nd room. Keep clogging the corridor with new Summons. Don't be afraid to pull anyone close to death (or brain-death) back into the first room to heal & return.

Evantually, if you make good use of Summons & the corridors (by making them come to you), you'll win (trust me, I did). Or, you could always wait til you're higher level... say, after the Underdark... which is what I do with the vast majority of my games now, after having been through that torture before... Annatar 01-18-2003 04:12 PM

hehehe,,,, I was level 9-10 with 4 party members :D when I entered that place ''you sense a great evil power'' or something when you get near that door way that leads to the path of the Mind flayer city... me as a brave adventurer didn't care less and enterd the lair :D ... the first chamber it was like ''jezus christ wtf is this'' (reminder: my first time eye to eye with a illtihid!! damn) it was spooky and got slaughterd al the way... finally made it to the last room (better be worth it I thought!)...

just the same tactic as Eternal.. just went for the loot and finished that filty mind flayers an other day (level 14-16 :D ) Goodbye mind flayers...
