Two very useful definitions from Dictionary.com

existence:
To have actual being; be real.

Real:
Being or occurring in fact or actuality; having verifiable existence.

Erm...yes, very interesting, my life, or at least my day, has been enlightened.

Well-spotted, Meg! I mean they never use synonyms of a word to describe it in dictionaries. And it is quite surprising when one finds that synonyms work both ways :D

Dirty Meg 12-17-2004 01:58 PM

The point I was trying to make is that those definitions are useless in actually explaining the concept of existence/reality.

Blunderbuss 12-17-2004 02:04 PM

Okay, fair enough. Also, inflammable and flammable are also used to describe one another in the "Collins English Dictionary".

Yes, as in "I am right because I am much smarter than you, and I must be smarter than you because I am right".

If it was easy to define reality, philosophers would be out of a job.... Assuming, of course, we consider being a crazy street person or college professor a job.

From the "hitchhikers guide to the galaxy":
guidance: see advice
advice: see guidance

Anybody who discusses what's real and what isn't really needs to get a life. A REAL life.

Technically, something is "flammable" if it will burn in the presence of oxygen. Something that is "inflammable" will burn when not in the presence of oxygen. Things that are "non-inflammable" will not burn at all.
