Turn based is real strategy. Real Time is just click faster to win. Think about it. :D

I much prefer turn based, especially for RPG's where you are running multiple characters, with different action options for each. Real time should be for games like Freelancer and Mechwarrior. I know folks who won't play anything that isn't turn based.
I agree with Masklinn. |
Real time is great for the time in between fights; you are just telling people to move around, pick up stuff, etc. But turn based is the best when you are controlling mulitple characters in a combat. Let's face it, how many people played any of the Baldur's Gate games without hitting pause to give commands to your party? Once you hit pause, give commands, and they do the commands once you unpause, it is a rudimentary version of the turn based system in action. I loved playing the original Dune game (I believe Sega Genesis, if I remember right), but it was also annoying that all commands were given in real time. The computer could have all of his men move all at once, while I was stuck rushing around the map giving commands, all the while his guys moving around and attacking my guys. I'd be off on another part of the map trying to organize my people, then I would hear "base under attack." Go back, and he's got like 5 units there pounding on my base. Once I had my guys organized, and had enough forces in place to guard my stuff, then I could concentrate on my attacking force, and could keep a strong enough tabs on things to fight in real time. There's no way I would even think of playing BG2 without hitting pause at least a couple of times in the combat.
Personally, I prefer turned based, especially considering that is what I grew up with (I'll date myself by throwing out Bard's Tale and the original Pool of Radiance on my Commodore 64...). Gives you time to think and prepare strategy. That's why I'm looking forward to Temple of Elemental Evil. :D |
well im not sure of there being any turn based shooter
but they did come out with a realtime galatic conquest game - imperium galactica 2: alliances for instance is galactic conquest in real time (which i found to be *incredably* annoying |
I've seen real-time strategy before as well. I certainly liked it.
Though I still prefer turn-based. |
It really depends on the game and who likes the game. Warcraft would really be a horrible game as a turn based. but Games like heroes of might and magic would be just as horrible in the real time. i prefer real time but thats just my opinon.

I like the PSO battle system... Real Time Turn Based Combat
Sure you attacked like it was real time (similar to zelda) but combat was based on numeric values and you had to take turns (kind of) but attacks could be avoided by dodging and walking away instead of having a good initiative, though sometimes you would get a miss when you try to shoot someone and yoru oponents would ocasionally get misses too, so it was a combination of both moving about and attacking along with a turn-based mathematic system Real fun stuff... |
Nerull's post reads like a transcript of one of my StarCraft games. Let's be real: in that RT game you simply cannot control everything at once, whereas the computer can. That's its flaw, IMO. I think having it be real time WITH the ability to issue orders while pauses (which is the case now with StarCraft, IIRC) AND a hotkey pause button (e.g. space bar) makes it all good.
I think Hearts of Iron is a Real Time strategy conquest game. I didn't like it much. Some games just beg to be real time. FPS's, the new Enter the Matrix, etc. However, where strategy and/or conquest is concerned, I usually prefer real time. |
