... for the 2008 Olympics ? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Come one, share your thoughts ! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif As I am French, my opinion is necessarily biased ...

PARIS http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif - mmmmm Jambon et fromage baguette si vout plais. Hi Moraine - I know with the Olympics one thing that frustrates me sometimes is the two language system at every medal presenation (just seems very drawn out). Knowing how hard it is at times to find someone in Paris that admits they know any english (come on, someone must "parlez vous Anglais" http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif ), I am thinking (with slightly evil chuckle) that there would be many Parisians that would have to sit and get impatient listening to a lot of English - I could live with that http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif.

OK, that, and the human rights (China) thing mean it's Paris for me!!!

Paris...
Is it really going to be a nice environment if there are protestors everywhere in China? I don't think so.
Maybe a few years later, once the issues are sorted out in China (if that ever happens)

I'd go for Paris anytime. Mon dieux, zey ar' zo cool!

And just stolling down (not up) the Rue de La Fayette with me old dad... that was great! (for those not on the know, walking uphill on this specific road will make you meet certain ... ehh women. We are nearing Place Pigalle here.)

Don't think of China. They still have lots of things to learn, humanwise.

Moiraine 07-13-2001 06:25 AM

No vote for China ? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Today is the day when all cities make the final presentation of their case. According to what I saw and heard, on TV and on the radio, it seems that Paris has the best case, but Pekin will probably win nonetheless, for purely economical reasons : a lot of companies salivate for the bounty of the Chinese market ... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/No...cons/icon8.gif

I vote for China. I think Paris would be nice but let's have some world power here. (sorry frenchies). China is a major player at most olympics they should have a chance to host.

Ramon de Ramon y Ramon 07-13-2001 06:36 AM

Ouch ! Right on Smoothbrain ! Right on the soft spot of the Fench national psyche and pride ... Well, my vote goes to Paris, but I am prejudiced. Paris is one of my favorite cities.

Ditto here.

Paris is a dynamic amalgamation of beauty, history, art, and culture.

Paris is, in short, an amazing city.

I really hope it wins.

Moridin 07-13-2001 10:27 AM

Beijing WINS!!!!!

As I was posting my little post on why I thought Beijing over Paris, I checked the CNN site in another window and there it was!

Sorry Moiraine and all Parisians, but there is always 2012 http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

For me, far too many arguments against China to have them host...
Especially when considered against one of the most beautiful cities on earth!

I vote Paris

Yeah, but the gay decision-making committee decided not to deny the Chinese the chance over 'political issues'. That really makes me angry. Its like giving kids candy for being bad.

Okay, Moiraine, the bunny for Donut, but that still leaves my question unanswered ... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Sorry it turned out the way it did Moiraine. My vote was for Paris. Mybe this will put more of a urgency on the Human Rights issues in their country.? Well ...? I know, the check is in the mail, do you want to buy a bridge, their is an Easter bunny, warm water freezes quicker than cold, toilets flush the opposite way in the southern hemishere, alcohol keeps you warm in the winter....

Patriotic Canadian!
Hey what about Toronto!
They had an awesome bid...one that received more votes than Paris.
Beijing = 56 votes
Toronto = 22 votes
Paris = 18 votes
Istanbul = 9 votes
Osaka dropped from ballot after the first vote.
If it did not go to China the next best bid was Toronto.
I for one am happy that Toronto did not get it though because
this means that Vancouver/Whistler will have an awesome chance at getting
the Winter Olympics in 2010. I live in Victoria, on Vancouver Island if any
of you know where that is: kudos. It's just a short ferry ride away from Van.
Thus in 2010 I will go to an Olympic Event preferably Ice Hockey...Which
Canada will win! I have prophesied it! It came to me in a vision!

Beijing deserves the Olympics.
The most populous country on the earth has never had an Olympics
and it's about time they did. Having the olympics there will
be best in the long run and the issue of human rights will be
brought to the forefront. Thus having it there will mean
moving forwards on this topic for China...which is more important
than them not getting it and the issue never reaching that point.

Bingo! Please stop killing everyone who disagrees with you. Please! Here, if we (in effect) give you millions in payola will you stop? Please?

Yet again the most criminal nation on the planet gets rewarded for murder.

BTW, for all you dog lovers, did you know that in China it costs more than the equivalent of $400US to register a pet dog. That is more than their average citizen makes in a year! The law is based on the fact that their currnet ruler was bitten by a dog as a child and doesn't like them. Unregistered dogs are killed and the owners are fined.
