I noticed that you cause more damage if you have a 2-handed sword instead of dual wielding 2 longswords. I can't really understand it. Mathematically, dual wielding must cause more damage than 2handed because it's 1d8+5+2 x 2 , and the other is 1d10+5+2. When you wield a 2handed sword does your str modifier being calculated twice? Your ideas about 2handed and dual wield?

Zoltan 09-08-2001 10:53 PM

Here's the formula

2 HANDED

1d10 + 7 (str modifier) + 3 (proficiency bonus) +2 (fighting style bonus)

13-22 damage

DUAL WIELD

1d8 + 7 + 3 x 2 or 2d8 + 7 + 3?

Well if a katana causes 1d10 damage and you can dual wield then a 2h sword will be weak? The strange thing is I cause MASSIVE damage with 2 handed but dual wielding causes always normal damages

your wrong when it goes about the x2
as dualwielding does not mean you can hit twice as often
you get one attack extra with dualwielding
so in the higher levels you can get 3 attacks on a 2 handed and 4 on a dualwield
so let say you use carsomyr and 2 +3 long swords
to make it easier we won;t put in critical hits
you get 1d10+5*3 =3d30+15= 18 - 45 damage in one turn + str bonus
long swords 1d8+3*4 = 4d32+12 = 16 - 44 damgae in one turn + str bonus

Waverido,
I asked a question and then give my own idea (answer). Hope u got it http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Well thanks rikard,
I though that with dual wielding you hit with your 2 weapons at once I mean if your number of attacks is 4. You strike 4 times with both longswords. So, dual wielding isnt so much useful if you're right? But for only 1 extra attack I dont perefer dual wielding

You don;t attack with 2 swords at once
if you turn on to hit rolls
you can see hit roll at the first attack
and hit roll (left) with the second
etc.

I got it, but there's one more thign I wonder

You got a mace in your main hand. Your no of attacks is 2. You're making 2 attacks per round with mace. Then you wield celestial fury in your off-hand. Your no of attacks increases to 3. So you attack with mace 2 times and katana 1 times. Right?

My Paladin has 3 attacks per round with the holy avenger. WHY?
This is with no patch, no equipment (except for the sword)

This is normal. You're not GM in 2-handed. My fighter does 4 attacks per round but he's got boots of speed, grandmastery in 2-handed and he's level 15.

Also remember the penalties you face dual weilding, decreasing the liklihood of a hit.

The thing to be said about dual wielding in its defence is that its not all about straight damage calculations using 2 +3 longswords. The best reason to dual wield is the additional abilities of the 1 handed weapons. There is TONS of good 1h weapons in the game and wielding 2 at a time can really pile on the specials. I like to throw a weapon in my offhand that sorta fits the situation and I tend to run my best weapon in my mainhand. having a weapon in the offhand that gives say resistance to fear or something can make a huge diff in a fight if you know you are facing fear (dragons, symbol fear etc). This is where a 2handed sword has trouble keeping up. for some real fun try Celestial fury and flail of the ages (pixie prick works ok here too) and watch your enemy try to even make an attack http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

As far as I know, the weapon proficiency bonus ( to hit and damage bonus ) only applies to the main weapon and does not apply to the second weapon. Thats also why you miss out on the extra attack with it.

That's too bad that the extra attack which dual wielding gives you is being acted only with your off-hand weapon. That's too bad.

Dual wielding does not sounds good to me anymore. It gives you only 1 additional attacks. And this attack has a -2 penalty etc
