Hi Z,
Your module is very popular all over the world, so people pop in at all times. Why is the reset set for two hours? Most of the quests have been done and things slow to a crawl as the remains build up after several hours of play in the Undermountain. I try to tidy up after myself but I follow the group's lead. Are you trying to annoy the quest busters? I leave the quests alone if I'm playing a 40th level character and usually leave them alone if I'm a high level character. I've been on several quest completions that are out of my level though! Is half an hour before the reset to much to ask? Roddy |
I have only been playing for a week, but yet to find a quest. Lag was very bad today. Waiting for a 2 mins between each 'transaction' with a NPC merchant and fights :(
|
Sorry, I do usually reset it 2 times a day. I went to a wedding today, so was gone all day
I agree though, I'll lower the reset time to 30 mins. (For those that don't know what that means:) If the server is empty for atleast 30 mins, it will reset. The chances lately of it being reset have gone down, because it's been getting popular as hell, , and was set at 120 mins. So I just changed it to 30 mins instead. Thanks for the reminder, I did need to do that!! |
That's great! Half an hour suits me fine. I was going to PM you about it but I wanted to see what other people thought about the reset time. I think that some people prefer the instant reset as soon as the server is empty, but who can say? Hmmm, perhaps a poll...
|
I think a reset for the server immediately after it is cleared out would be in order. After all, it would not be that often thta the server is picked clean and would be advantageous for those who want a "fresh start" to simply do a ~shout~ and have everyone log back in within five minutes. Then those online the server at the time could simply go off and get their refreshments, coming back to a brand new game.
Of course, I just go on at random intervals so it doesn't really matter in my case. |
Ahhhhhh, I was wondering why I could not find a quest till late last night. I've been playing for a while too, and was having a tough time finding quests, Now I get it.
Nice Work Z !! |
I really like the 'instant reset' because I find that it's hard to find quests with my lower level characters (well actually I've had same problem with 30+ level I guess) and sometimes we go in to play just to try and find the quest on a level we did earlier when they were already taken.
If there are only a few of us on it's nice to shout and get off the server then come back and find things reset. Hubby and I did that with someone the other night but after 15 min we went back in and it wasn't reset so we left and didn't go back, I thought something was wrong or we missed someone who was on the server but hadn't shown up (that happens once in a while). So I think I like the 10 or 15 minute reset time, myself but I guess a half hour's not too bad as long as the reset 'clock' starts when the server empties. If it's only going to start when the servers has already been empty an hour that could be a problem! Especially on weekends when it won't reset much because of the crowds on! Instant reset sounds pretty good to me - last few days i've been coming on to a carpet of remains through lvls 10 through 12 and massive lag - It's rather disheartening also to find you fight your way through a level to find some one's farmed it - reason why i leave the placed items if i already have them. At the moment i log on and if i see remains everywhere i log back off as there's no point in trying to play.

We had a instant reset for a while but it did cause some problems with people loggin off and the amount of times that the server was reset in a day.
The problem with the instant reset is that when you were soloing and you were logged off the server would instantly reset and take 10-15 minutes to come back up again. I think a half hour of being empty is a good time for a reset. |

To get all philosophical, consider if the suffering of a single solo player outweighs the mass suffering of a server-load of people with lag and no quests ;)
How about 5 minutes? That way, if the solo player crashes out, he has time to log back in, but there's still a reasonable chance of a reset if he leaves for good... [ 03-22-2005, 12:20 PM: Message edited by: shamrock_uk ] |
LOL, I'd say that's fair, shamrock ;) I just figure if it is always hard to find quests/items and rarely resets it gets frustrating for some of us and we just don't go back in once we see it like that. I was thinking it's a shame to have people driven off because resets are few and far between. But I do see the solo persons problem if their game crashes or something, too.

I agree with Shamrock on the five minute reset. The possibility of getting back in without losing your place if you are the only player on and you crash is very welcome.
The other point which people are mentioning here is that, with Undermountain becoming more and more popular, there is a much greater chance now of logging in and finding quests done and the levels covered in the debris of previous fights. Something similar happened when I logged on last night. The mod seemed to have been well farmed. I did team up with Toro and Talia in the proving grounds but eventualy ended up in a (enjoyable) conversation with them and others on the shout channel. All the while other players were logging in but they may not have found much to do by then. Is there a case now for regular or automatic resets (alongside the reset when empty)? Perhaps every few hours or at set times of the day so that players would know when to come in to get a long run on the server. |
Z is probably the most accomodating GM out there, hehe Good job Z
|
I hope something can be done. It is madding trying to get in and get to a quest before the Farmer boys and girls.
I am glad that the mod has taken off. Quicker resets or only allowing each player to be able to do each quest once per reset. I kinda figure that would be hard to script but it would be a great feature.. Just my .05 cents worth. |
Is there a way to shut off a quest, say if a player come thru and does the quest? That way all the little people(lvl-wise) will be able to get xp points. I think that is a good deal.
|
Yeah, I thought about this but I'm not sure if its feasible.
The script behind the character giving the quest would have to remember which character has done it, yet somehow reset themselves to let others do the quest. Not sure if that's possible... |
Hmmm not really at the moment you can do multiple quests (I.e Kraken Spy quest) its just that the quest item doesn't respawn.
Maybe Z could write up a script to respawn all the quest items every 2 hours or something like that. |
Respawn the quest items.. now there is an idea..But I Have Bumpis {sp?} eggs and if someone has done the quest it will not let me finish the quest..
Wish I knew more about scripting NWN. |
Hmmm thats strange because I have been able to do the demon artifact quest twice when I had two of the items on me.
Strange. |

Thing is, I'd like to experience the mod, not just run frantically through it looking for places that aren't littered with debris from previous fights and quests that aren't done yet. Not just for the xp, but for the fun of doing it, if that makes any sense! Guess this is all on account of it being so popular, which is a GOOD thing, but it does take away from the fun for some of us, obviously. So if there IS a way to fix this or restart quests etc, that'd be great! [ 03-24-2005, 08:44 AM: Message edited by: Cloudbringer ] |
Yea, if the quest has been done Bumpis and his mate are there and all he says is thanks for finding my eggs..
I have had these eggs in my pack for so long i am I think they about to hatch.. |
Can we reduce the 30 mins down to 10 as 30 mins isn't working at all - logged on this evening and wandered down to lvl 11 - each spawn point had 30+ remains packs there - was 3 ppl on and we all agrree to log off for 30 mins - unfortunately other ppl kept logging on every 10 mins or so as i was watching the server population on gamespy so the server never reseted and is still pretty unplayable :( -
|
logged back on now - and still no reset now 40+ bags per spawn point - module totally unplayable - 15secs to acknowledge move and then rubberbanding every step :(

I remember Psylence (forgot the proper spelling) mentioned a few times about clean-up scripts. Perhaps a few of those would be in order? That way the game is not trying to remember items left behind after five to ten minutes, and would be able to just spawn in new creatures the way it ought to be? Sure, that would make it a little more difficult for carpetbaggers like myself to make a profit from the leftovers of others (which is, of course, how I made my first one million gold), but it would definitely be beneficial to the server as a whole.
I have no idea how they are implimented, or the workings behind said scripts, but I know they are on many of the Persistent Worlds I have heard being successful. And as Escape From Undermountain is already a success, it cannot hurt to use clean-up scripts to make it even better. (At least it should become faster.) |
