"Mini index" links added, whole index in alphabetical order (except general info which deserves to be 1st donīt it?). Rephrased entries according to Bungleauīs excellent advise, the same with the numbers, added the TNT graphics card conflict, removed some double posted entries and of course got rid of those pesky extra line breaks. :D :D
BTW Wyv, would you like a link to your hexedit thread in here as well? [ 07-25-2002, 08:38 PM: Message edited by: WillowIX ] |
Looks real sweet. Is there a way that you can make a thread that only certain people can post stuff at?
You should also create one on how to put smiley faces in the text. BTW how do you do that? DeathDragon ************************************************** ******************** Once you see a Death Dragon It's already to late ************************************************** ******************** |
Well, everyone will be able to post in the thread if the run into a new problem (thereīll be an "Unsolved" category as 10 I think). When theyīre answered the solutions will be integrated in the corresponding category. The smileys isnīt really a tech issue. But Iīll tell you how to put them in here, to get a regular smiley you just type ": )" without the blank. A very happy smiley is ": D". Check the graphics library button topside to see loads of smileys! You put those in here by typing for example : blueblink : (without blanks) -->
|
The unsolved catagory is a really good idea. BTW thanks for tell me how to make the smilies There are some very interesting ones there. Also, what does Elite Watergate Guard mean? I've been wondering that for a little while.

I like, I like!
Thanks, WillowIX, for putting this all together. !Muchas gracias! I think this thread should be for technical problems only; hexedit really isn't a tech problem (although, as I think about it, it can probably cause some!). Perhaps it should be included with the standard warnings. And I like the unsolved problems idea, too! That leaves room for the future, and to find the future. Methinks Smilies belong on a forum best tips thread, not a W&W-specific thread. But hey, I've been rambling a lot these past few days... And finally, Elite Waterdeep Guard is a title in the forum. Consider it like a level; as you post more, you gain experience and move up. It comes from Spelljammer, an RPG originally from TSR (and now retired, I think). When the boards were put together, a lot of titles were compiled from a variety of places. To find out more about your current title, do a google search on it and you'll find some stuff. That's how I found out what a manshoon was... yuk! [ 07-25-2002, 11:54 PM: Message edited by: Bungleau ] |
Willow & Bungleau, I think you've put in a wonderful effort creating the index and lists. I've looked at the items and there is a lot of duplication and the solutions are actually few in number. Why don't you simplify the list into three new threads:
1. Read this if you're playing the game in Windows 2000 or XP 2. Technical problems with graphics/sound/memory 3. Known problems in the game and some workarounds In thread 1, include a list of the symptoms and problems e.g. - cannot enter buildings in town - game freezes when opening chests - game freezes when casting spells and then paste one set of instructions to install virtual dub In thread 2, cut and paste the steps for reinstalling directX 8, TNT graphics conflict, sound cards, memory settings etc In 3. Put the guidelines upfront and a warning that this section includes spoilers. To keep this short and simple, my suggestion would be describe the problem and give the workaround e.g. Problem: Game freezes when I get bitten by Adrianna in Skull Castle Solution: Install the patch (add link) which fixes this known problem Problem: Cannot give toad potion to Mekdawa Solution: Make sure you go to icon menu, select give/use, scroll to potion, and then point to Mekdawa and click. Problem: Cannot give dragon arrow to Torin Solution: His inventory may be full. Try buying or exchanging items or else pickpocket him until you free up a slot in his inventory Problem: Game crashes when I'm fighting Cet Soultion: Reload a saved game and try fighting Cet from the left hand side, up against the wall. Problem: My ship is stuck next to Talrik's place Solution: Create a portal and cast teleport on the ship I suggest that you lock these three threads at the top so that they remain visible and also avoid cluttering. If you want, create a fourth thread "Unsolved problems" where readers can paste their problems (probably best to highlight that they should check the above three threads before posting). However, it seems that readers just create a new thread when they have a problems, so this fourth thread may or may not be necessary.. good luck.. |

Windows settings 9.1 - How to change swap file size 9.2 - Tip for the Windows swap file 9.3 - Turn on compatibility mode in win2000/XP ...8. Windows 2000/XP Issues. This one makes me curious....Are there any problems that have 2 different solutions, based on OS? If there are couldn't we add; 1.0 - 'Do you know what OS you're running?' Then put 2 seperate links, on items, with multiple solutions. example: 3.1 - Game crashes during Cet - Kerah fight....(2000/XP...link)...(95/98/ME...link) And 1 last question...Is, '4.9 - TNT graphics card conflicts', is this a conflict with a certian model? I was using a TNT 2, with no problems. |
Tha names of the categories are just something I put together in a minute. All of thóse can of course be changed. :D The OS (w2k) was put in there on Bungleauīs request. For instance I know my gam crashes whe I try to disarm a chest. I might the like to know what other issues there are. The ones you listed as double posted I call cross indexed lol. The w2k issues under "game crashes" will still link to the post about w2k. The "how to use virtualdub" will be in the same post that has the link. Now that you mention it, it might be silly to have that as an entry of itīs own. If you click on the virtualdub link youīre bound to read how it works right? (The same with dx8, the link for dx buster will be in here). The TNT is a driver issue. Some of the newer drivers donīt work with the game. Check the thread "Still Locks in the game" by Baron Sengir on page 4 in the forum (can you guess how long it took to find it?lol). In the same thread is also another solution to crashes with w2k. And the entries you think can be moved. Why not give us (=me) an example? Plz? Pretty plz? :D (Otherwise I wonīt get it until next week lol!)

WOWZAH!!!!
Oh, all of you are just so excellent!!! Special thanks, Willow, for all the effort you've been putting in and kudos to all for the buffing and polishing. This is just going to be such a useful thread!! Makes me wonder if I shouldn't reorganize the BEST TIPs into a more logical sequence as well. I'll have to think about that idea another day! LOL! I'm way to busy right now but it certainly is worth considering! Wyv |
WOW! Lots of good feedback.
To address things in no particular order... Packrat, I like the condensed index. Should make it quicker to get to an answer. And the double-postings are cross-indexes -- one solution may resolve multiple problems, so we list all the problems on the index pointing to the one solution. Just like the library, where things are catalogued by title, author, subject... all pointing to one book. the_young_one, I like your thoughts too. I see that our previous discussion threads on this topic are no longer around; we went through a number of considerations, and you've brought up a few new things. First, this is just the tech problems thread. Gameplay stuff is covered in the Best Tips thread, which we may revamp after this is done. None of the items in here should be construed as spoilers except indirectly. For example, noting there's a problem in the Cet-Kerah fight tells you there will be one eventually, but that's hard to get around. We'll just make sure not to tell you too much about it Taking that into consideration, perhaps we ought to mention in the initial post that gameplay tips are in the other thread, and that if you can't find what you're looking for here, you might want to look over there. And based on the way this index is shaping up, I don't think we need two indexes any more. It looks fairly easy to find an answer to a specific problem by simply reading, and with the categories in place, you can look around the entry you're in for other related problems. I still think Win2000/XP issues should be a separate category since there are so many and they really cripple gameplay. Sure, someone could look for every individual symptom, but after the second or third thing I had to fix and restart, I might find something better to do... like clip my toenails Great job, all! |
Bungleau, why not start to sketch on that initial post? I like the index as it is now, maybe remove the:
7.2 - How to use Virtualdub (the how to use will be read when finding the link wouldnīt it?) and merge (not post in a different thread) 1. General Information 1.1 - How to find the info you need 1.2 - What to include in your post when posting here with 9. Windows settings 9.1 - How to change swap file size 9.2 - Tip for the Windows swap file 9.3 - Turn on compatibility mode in win2000/XP. I still think the directx shuld be in there since it can be a problem. The "2 General Gameplay Problems" is a very good naem and has been noted! If you feel that some other categories should be renamed plz mail me canadian_cuty@hotmail.com (makes it easier for me to compare and change). :D |
If it makes it easier to work in email, we could create a group emailing so everyone gets a copy.
I'm maiee@earthlink.net Wyv |
I'd love to have a copy too. Makes it easier to look through than scrolling down on the message board. (black_hawk222@yahoo.com)
Personally, I don't think we should merge those catagories WillowIX. Windows problems and general information are a little different. The General Information one tells you about the information on the page and where and how to post the messages to get help, and the Windows problems tells you how to mess with Windows to get the game functioning right. Is there major problems between different OS? Cause I've been using Windows 98 Second Edition and haven't been getting any of those problems. The only problem that I get is that I get kicked out of the game after playing for like 4 hours straight, but that happens on lots of different computers. Getting rid of that second index really minimizes the searching process and makes the tech thread the way it is supposed to be, easy to access. I like that idea with the only 3 catagories, but won't that make it harder to find the exact thing that you are looking for? We should also get all the links for like dx8 and all that now so that we won't have as many problems getting the thing together plus it will be set up faster. BTW, what is VirtualDub? DeathDragon ************************************************** ******************** Once you see a Death Dragon It's already to late ************************************************** ******************** |
Willow IX you make life so much easier for me. Thank you.
I like what the_young_one posted. Because that is the same way I was thinking about the whole format/setup/indexing. Should be done tonight or tomorrow. Looks like there may be more than 5 entries, now that I look at Willow's index. Detah |
Okay, I'll get started on the initial post. Will be later tonight, but something should be there come the wee hours of the morning. And as usual, it will be a starting point, available to be ripped to shreds by your swords, staves, and spears so that it can be reassembled more effectively.
And on the topic of indexing, seems to me I saw somewhere that indexes were best at around five to seven items per level. Fewer than that, and they become pointless. More than that, and they become harder to follow. I think the light index is a good one, and we should keep with it. I also think that the items the_young_one mentioned are good topics for the first few posts (once sticky posts come back). As long as they stay close together, all bases will be covered and life will be good in the Gael Serran. And DeathDragon, there are issues between operating systems, particularly Win 2000 and XP. Virtualdub is one of the tools you use so things will work properly in those OSes -- without it, movies crash and life isn't good. I also play on Win98 (but first edition, patched), so I haven't directly experienced those things. As a side note to the_young_one, please don't think that I'm discounting any of your suggestions. In fact, I'm considering them quite a bit. The layout we're working with right now will support what you've suggested with a few minor tweaks (and the addition of the best tips thread, coming later). |
OK, Iīve been ponding packratīs post for a few hours now. Merging directx with virtualdub (categories 2 and 7) can be a good thing since you get more entries in that single category and it might therefor be easier to notice. I donīt agree with the name "General Gameplay Problems", since that sounds too undefined. If someone can think of anything to match the category plz convey the info here! I still feel that merging 1 and 9 can work too. The category can be named to something with the info "need to know before posting/playing" but in a more elaborate way perhaps. Or perhaps keeping general info and merge 2, 7 and 9 into a single category and call it "Game settings" or some such? You could still call that "Windows settings" (all are windows realted problems). The 2nd one is more appealing to me. Comments?
|
Okay, about that index thing... I was really joking. April fool!
*ducks as WillowIX throws numerous heavy blunt objects* Ouch! Just kidding! Actually, on your last post, WillowIX, I agree and disagree. I think section 1 should stand by itself, perhaps renamed as "Getting Started" or "How to use this list". Sections 2 and 7, directx and virtualdub, make sense to merge. Perhaps a title like "drivers and more" would make sense, in which case we could also merge 6, sound problems into that area. I think it makes sense to merge section 9, Windows Settings, too; perhaps with section 5, installation problems. Perhaps call that section "Installation checklist and issues" or something like that. We might also rename section 8, Win2000/XP issues, to "Windows issues" and include that solitary listing, 4.7 currently, on Win 98/ME issues. Then to keep the OS visibility, perhaps we could include the OS in the description. That's all for now. Stay tuned for more details. |
I agree totally with Bungleau. Section 1 should be left alone where it is and only merge the other ones. The names that Bungleau used for the sections also sound way better than the old ones (no offence WillowIX).
I've been thinking about the unsolved section. I'm not sure, with this many people on this board, we will have any unsolved problems. Plus the unsolved problems would look kinda bad on a tech sheet that is going to be as good as ours. If we have an unsolved problem, we should just post it in its own thread then delete it after when we have gotten the answer and post the answer on the tech sheet. We should also create another section, Frequently Asked Questions. That way we wont have several posts about the same problem in a short period of time. |
K letīs see if I can remember the changes lol. General Info gone since itīs in the greeting by Bungleau, merged directx with virtualdub calling it pregame issues (name suggestions plz), merged windows 2000/xp issues with windows settings into one windows category (called Windows Issues). Added "Back to Top" at the bottom. Thatīs only in there to make it possible to link back from the posts to the mini index. Hmmm thatīs it I think...

Iīve tried to do the Windows Issue post with Bungleauīs layout. The links in the index to that section should be fully operational. Sorry but the post became rather loooong. Correct me if I misunderstood you Bungleau. I removed the "Symptom" and posted it as a headline for the problem.

The layout looks Great!!! One other question....are there going to be any of the ....Ooops, I forgot to pick up my party.....Type of solutions, posted in this thread? |
Good thought, Packrat!
Those probably should be included since that's a problem players run into from time to time. As this all begins to really come together we should be able to spot and add the few things that might have been missed and need including. Wyv |
Maybe Bungleau, should squeeze another couple of lines in the...'How to find your answers', or 'You wanna know what' sections.
Something like....It will be a little easier to find solutions, if you know what Operating System you are using. I wouldn't want someone running 98/ME to think they need to use Vdub, just because they forgot their party. [ 07-31-2002, 06:46 PM: Message edited by: Packrat ] |
Gimme thoughts, Packrat, gimme thoughts. My brain's a little tapped out right now, so please don't worry about hurting my feelings :D
As for misusing the tips, hopefully the posts will be explicit enough to tell you when it matters (or doesn't matter) for you. We'll have to wait and review Detah's work for that. |
Is your background in here green Packray? LOL, Iīll change the color to pink (I really liked that one:D). The virtualdub fix has a (win2000/XP) after it right? Otherwise Iīll put one of those in there. And Bungleau, all the info is in dxdiag, OS, swap size, dx version, sound/graphics card, driver versions. All you need is to run that and youīll get all the info by going through the different tabs. And if we add "forgot picking up party", where do I put it in the index? Along with directx or? I need help!!!! :D :D
ps. I inserted a horisontal line. Does it help or not? [ 08-01-2002, 06:27 AM: Message edited by: WillowIX ] |
Perhaps a MISC. PROBLEMS section that could have the
Pick up your party and maybe (?) a word or two about how long it takes to become a Monk? Things like that that players sometimes mistake for being techie problems but really aren't OR - Maybe those could end up in the BEST TIPS but linked from the TECHIE thread? (nothing like keeping it simple, eh?) LOL!!! Let's get the bulk of the TECHIE thread done as already planned. We can tweak it as needed. I've got some BC errands to run today so will be gone until this afternoon. |
I just got a chance to read this this morning.
I prefer WillowIX's coloration format than my bullet format. Lets go with the red, yellow, yellow, blue that she has. And put all the solution posters names in one list separated with commas. There is no need for a separate line for each persons name. I dont know what I was thinking. Short. Remember. Short is best. Detah |
Thatīs the beauty of the "a name tag" Detah! As long as the post is on 1 page it doesnīt matter that thereīs an extra line to announce the people who provided the solution. We link straight to the answer from the index and then back to the index in the post. No scrolling necessary! :D But what of teh horisontal lines? I like them personally since they separate the answers.

I like the format
----- problem solution citation ----- But I dont think it will work well with how some of the problem and solutions exist. The nature of some of the questions require several fixes (solutions) and some of the problems should point to the same solution. Therefore the use of horizontal lines would force you to reproduce problems and solutions more than once. And that defeats the purpose of merging all the posts. But if you can find a better way than my bullets, go for it. I am not commited to my setup. And I will not be insulted if anyone changes it. It was just the clearest best way I could think of at the time. Detah |
Hmm, no thereīs no need to post the same answer twice. All the win2000 issues under game crashes will still link to the same post so thereīs no need to post the win2k answers under the game crashes, theyīll link to the windows post.

Did everyone get a copy of Detah's wwtechie1.doc to look over and review?
Wyv |
I got a copy, but I haven't had a chance to take a serious look at it yet (sorry, detah).
I'll get to it this evening, I suspect. Finished my active MM9 game last night, and I need a breather. |
Willow? Packrat?
Did you get copies?? I really rely on all of your opinions for refining the posts into the final form. I can (not today, I'm still semi BC brain dead) try to read them over for a non-techie critique but all of you are much better qualified to see that all the problems/solutions are explained clearly. Wyv |
Oooops. Yes Iīve gotten it but Iīve, eeehmm, somewhat forgotten all about it lol..
|
Why dont we just post it as is and then we can refine it as we get input.
I know you made that one change that we talked about, so whoever edited that last fix, post their version please. The sooner we get that puppy up, the sooner no one else needs to look at that horrible old techie thread. Boy, is that thing scraggly. Detah |
