Saberlayne 03-21-2001 11:25 AM

Hi all,

Well, battle after battle my group has finally reached the Dragon's Eye area 3. I must say, up until this point I have had great success in vanquishing my foe and securing decent loot, as well as making a few towns people happy with the return of their loved ones.

I enter the Third Area of Dragon's Eye and BAM!!! My group was pitifully destroyed!! The welcoming party not only had me outnumbered, but had better fighting skills. Is there anyway to win this battle without the use of magic? My group has a mage (level 7), though, up until now he has been primarily used for healing. I fear for my band of heroes because after several failed attempts to get past the welcoming party I am at a complete loss for strategy... any help, or strategic ideas will be appreciated greatly. (...please, no spoilers or cheats, just strategy ideas)

My band is:

(level 6) dwarf fighter (mace)
(level 6) human fighter (sword/bow)
(level 6) human ranger (bow)
(level 6) human thief (bow)
(level 7) human mage (level 1,2 and some 3 spells)
(level 7) human cleric (level 1,2 and some 3 spells)

Thanks, in advance, for any help given...

Saberlayne, I'm pleased to see that you have found your way on to the third level of Dragon's Eye. It sounds, however, as if you have left the frying pan and entered the fire! Here are some hints that might help get you thinking of ways to defeat the forces of evil:

1. Are you getting messages that say "Weapon Ineffective"? If so, then perhaps weapons of a superior quality are called for.

2. The creatures that you are encountering are "undead." Do any members of your party have skills that are particularly useful against such monsters?

3. Advance very slowly from the level entrance--move forward inch by inch. Caution is always better than rushing pell-mell into an ambush!

4. If at first you don't succeed... Keep trying different tactics. You will usually find that "impossible" fights are easy once you discover the enemy's weakness.

Good hunting!

If it's the massive cold wright charge, he's how I did it. I had clerics (I suppose it would work with one) turning undead my two fighter stayed close to the clerics wacking any monster that din't turn, my Summoner and my Thief Illusionist pelted the undead that did get turned with magic missiles so they would be easyer for my fighter to kill.

Since you are there at the stairs to go up, if the going gets a little tough, run away. When you get back up the stairs, you are in an excellent place to rest your party to start the onslaught anew.-Xavier

Heh....since you put it that way, fine (for those who've got HOW) use Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, just don't cast it near your party and keep away from children.

Hi Saberlayne,

Well my party is almost identical to yours (except I have a paladin instead of your sword fighter) and the way I beat the wights, was to kill a few and then leg it out of the level, rest and then return. Also if you can beat the initial rush, then the extra wights can be lured out of their hiding places a few at a time, i.e. when you see one don't move to it, as you will alert other monsters, let it come to you.

I am only just a little way ahead of you so if you get stuck email me or post here. (i'm at the last bit of the dragons eye, about to get the Heartstone)

Thanks everyone,

Synthius, thank you for your strategic ideas and encouragement, I shall pass it along to my group and hopefully their spirits will raise a wee bit http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Strahd Von Zarovich and Accord, thanks, but forgive my ignorance here, how do you turn undead?

Xavierbreth, thanks, though there are no stairs close by unless you are reffering to the exit door.

Khanar, aye', my blades be dulled by foe http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

250, I do like your idea, however in such close quarters I fear I might just wipe out my entire band, and most certainly at least make it a hot place to work.

Sir_Tainly, Hi, your strategy I think would fit my band very well indeed. It didn't occur to me that I could simply jump the exit, rest and come back fresh with all my wounds healed (...and for Khanar, my blades sharpened). Thank you.

Thanks to all again for your great ideas!!

...personal note: This is my first attempt at RPG on the computer, (as oppossed to countless hours on paper) and I must say that it is AWESOME!! I still miss the interaction between "live" players/opponents, but I suppose that is what these forums are for http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

...though I have played Asheron's Call (lvl 36 warrior) and EverQuest (lvl 17 Mage) I don't really consider them to be "true" RPG games because of the very "thin" story lines, lack of quests and the constant barrage of hack 'n slashers. Gosh, I hope this thread doesn't turn into a "flame" for AC/EQ lovers, for it is not my intentions at all http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

You need to have paladin or cleric in order to turn undead, this can be activated with the "skull" icon in the game screen when the paladin/cleric is selected. Keep in mind you can only walk around when turning undead, once you start to fight/cast spells, the turn undead function will be off. If your paladin and cleric are good aligned and high level, turn undead can destroy those pest where they stand.

I give my thief the ring of free action, turn him invisible, and let him scout around. Find a bunch of people you want to beat up on, back stab one, and on the way back to your party have your mage cast web in front of the group. Get your thief through the webbing and back to the group just as your mage(s) cast fireball around the web are where hopefully a few monsters get stuck. Beat the crap out of any that make it through the web with the rest of your party. If it looks like it will be especially tough, cast two or three web spells out there to stick it to them.

Hmmm, that brings to mind another question I have... I have a DSL connection and I seem to loose connection to this forum/IronWorks fairly regularly (...2 or 3 times per/session). I have never had this problem with any other boards or websites. Is this a common problem with this site or is it unique to my computer?

Thanks

The connection problems you are having have been because Ziroc (the webmaster) has been doing some work on the site, including moving the forums to a new server, which took several days to sort out. This probably also caused your 'multiposting' symptom! You can delete your excess posts by clicking on the 'edit/delete' pic which is in the box of the post. Beware though, if you delete the first post in a thread, the whole thread will disappear, but you can only delete your own posts/threads.

The board is usually reliable and is now a lot faster for us 56k modem folks thanks to all Ziroc's hard work!

...that is splendid news indeed, thank you Epona for the clarification, and cheers to Ziroc for his efforts in creating a GREAT forum for RPG people http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
