1. I am a undead hunter and my party is minsc valygar keldorn aerie and jan. Now i've been in the underdark for a while and just got the quest where i had killed the wrong beholder so now i got to go kill one of the 3 noble races. I plan to go through all three so whats the best order
Here is the order i plan to go through the city/lair things.. (1. Beholders (2. Fish thingies (3. err Mind flayers hehe

2. Im really scared of the Ith.. Ithil..Mind Flayers and i probaly will do those last. Any other tips when im fighting them?

3. I just bought this rope from this merchant in the drow city and he says it was jarlaxes when will he come and get it?

Ok well im consider myself roleplaying this undead hunter but i can justify any before hand spells cast on my self by the logic "hmm walking into a city/lair full of enemies.. maybe i should cast haste .etc."

If any more information is needed please specify.

1. Kuo-Toa is the easiest to do first. Are you sure you want to do all three? If you are going to do all three, it's probably best that you only do one now and the other two after you finish the whole Adalon thing.

2. Cast Chaotic Commands on your fighters and use people with a good AC to melee them (The Illithid, not your fighters :) to death. Archer is quite helpful if you have one.

3. Spoiler

Go to the Lich's tower (Deirex). It's South/West the temple of Lolth in Ust'Natha. Just follow the little series there and you'll soon find Jarlaxle.

Have you done the Cult of the Unseeing Eye quest? If so, you know what awaits you in the Beholder lair. It could be easy as pie, or it could be sheer hell, depending on how you prepare. Warning: There's an Elder Orb in there that will cast a spell that is not common to most Beholders, and you will NOT like it. Happily, he/she/it can only cast it once.

Mind Flayers: Once you enter, you CAN NOT LEAVE until you beat it.
You will need a Tank with a) a good AC, 2) a really low Save vs. Spells, and c) More than 10 INT.
Due to a bug, Charming the Mind Flayers will work for what you need them to do, but Charming the Ulitharids will not work. (Is BaldurDash doing something about this?)

Kou-Toa: How these things manage to compete with Illithids is beyond me. The scariest thing about them is that they can all see right through all forms of invisibility.

2 SixofSpades

O man you got me worried about the beholder well i dont know want to know it ability ill probaly figure it out the hard way hehe.
My main charecter has like -4 ac but i can make that like -7 and valygar has -6 Is that good enough? o yea and my main character has 11 intelligence.

OK i will remember about the invisibility on the Kuo-Toa (sp?). I guess that was why they can always kill my wizard's eyes

I'm probably gonna be the third responder to this post, but what the heck...

1. I am a undead hunter and my party is minsc valygar keldorn aerie and jan. Now i've been in the underdark for a while and just got the quest where i had killed the wrong beholder so now i got to go kill one of the 3 noble races. I plan to go through all three so whats the best order

Do all three of them, even though you only need blood from one. There's lots of great loot and experience to be had.
Kuo-Toan Lair (Western tunnels): They're not marked, so you're going to have to do some poking around in the Underdark to find them. It's right below the Sfvirneblin (deep gnome) village. Easiest of the three, IMO. Heck, there's another battle in the lair that's harder than the battle for the blood. (As Six says, "place" is misleading. Items don't work. There's a nearby fish that was most likely placed there to help you figure this one out.
Beholder Lair (Southern tunnels): You don't need to go far to get what you need, but poke around here anyway for major treasure. Chaotic Commands help against the Elder Orbs. There are plenty around here. And remember the cloak of <s>cheese</s> mirroring you picked up in Shark City?
Illithid (Mind Flayer) Lair (Western tunnels): This place can only be difficult if a) you're not prepared for mind flayers and b) you're not attentive enough to the puzzles around you. There's one puzzle that might trip you up, but the answers to it can either be found on your person or in the lair itself.

2. Im really scared of the Ith.. Ithil..Mind Flayers and i probaly will do those last. Any other tips when im fighting them?

Best way to fight mind flayers: Give your best fighter(s) potions of genius and cast the cleric spell Chaotic Commands on them. Potions of genius are like healing potions for the mind, and chaotically commander characters can't be stunned by psionic blasts or confused by umber hulks. Stick your melee fighters right by one of the doors. Open it, and leave enough room in front of the door for only one or two mind flayers to stand. Have a mage fire a cloudkill to get rid of the umber hulks. Let your protected fighters clean up the mind flayers and your archers pepper their illithid hides with arrows, bolts, and stones.

3. I just bought this rope from this merchant in the drow city and he says it was jarlaxes when will he come and get it?

Remember what the merchant said about about the rope? More specifically, where about using the rope? Try going there and seeing what happens.

Ok well im consider myself roleplaying this undead hunter but i can justify any before hand spells cast on my self by the logic "hmm walking into a city/lair full of enemies.. maybe i should cast haste .etc."

There's a difference between roleplaying and powergaming. You also know when you're walking right into a den of stinking evil or the Den of Seven Vales. So before you go covering Boo's nose and leaving no crevice untouched, by all means, buff up.

(A nice trick: Aerie can cast both cleric and mage spells from a minor sequencer or a spell sequencer. Spells cast by a sequencer are near instantaneous. Instead of casting your blessings and chantings and hastings before battle, have Aerie prep a spell sequencer with bless, chant, and haste. Find yourself in the heat of battle? Pause the game and have Aerie fire off that sequencer. Unpause the game, and presto! Tough and buff. :D )

A slight difference in tactics--I tend to leave the Umber Hulks alone, using them as shields: If an Umber Hulk is standing right in front of my Tank, that means the Mind Flayers can only come at me 1 at a time instead of 2 at a time. And in that place, cutting the enemy's rate of Critical Hits in half makes all the difference.

Rapida 04-07-2003 08:20 PM

IM loving these stragetigies. lol
I think i will be able to kill the beholders and the fish pretty easily. The special ability of the elder orb has me a little worried but im sure i can handle it. I think i have 2 potions of genius. Now im thinking i might survive this. o well now im gonna start on the fish.. Come mere fishy fishy fishy. mwahahah

Lord Demerol 04-07-2003 11:25 PM

A last (and probably late) tip: Once you're turned into a Drow, visit the Duergar Merchants. They'll show you some goodies, now with some spells they didn't have before in their stock... including a glorious 'Mordenkainen's Sword' scroll.

...and the Mordy Sword is inmune to all that psionic crap... get it?

You don't have to do all three, well I didn't. I always do the fish or beholder, and I don't go very far in, or I die. I just get what I need and get out.
Err, are you meant to do all three?

TaSSaDaR 04-08-2003 08:50 AM

And whats wrong with doing all the three? My mobile-artille... hm.. sorry, my solo sorcerer did all three in no time. Take some cheesed-in Planetars, mix with Mordenkainen's Swords, add some enemies (who cares which ones?) and shake well. Lots of xp at no cost

Being serious, mordenakinen's swords are the answer to illithid problem, and the rest is a game. Also, IIRC, my berserker did all the illithid lair alone - Jaheira stood back, occasionally casting some CCs on him (not Chain Contingencies ). A general advice - boost your Ac and try to deliver as much damage per round as you can. A good illithid is a dead illithid

BTW, i did all the locations ever before I met Adalon/visited the drow.

Grammar 04-08-2003 10:21 AM

If you're looking to make special items, I advise doing more than just one

Edit: That's what I do nowadays too, TaSSaDaR (Protoss boy). I find it works much better because then I can do Spoiler

Deirex's tower/Jae'ellat during that time period and have plenty of time to spare. I can also do the Ghaunator worshippers.

I don't know the spelling of the Drow god of slime thing or the house :(

Merlin from Amber 04-08-2003 10:53 AM

Do the three - nice exp and lot of fun

Safe way to kill Illithids (Mind Flayers).
This way is safe for your party, but also slow, so as you wish.

Do you have some potions of invisibility ? If you do then at this moment Aerie should have two 6th lvl spells (ring needed) and blade shield. Memorise two blade shield spells and get her invisible with the potion. Switch off the party AI or when near illithid she'll start hitting it and will become visible and ... will die. One potion will keep her invisible for 12 hours (game time) i.e. with one potion she'll be able to cast 4 blade shields (somethimes illithid save vs spell). Put her near the illithid group and cast the shields. The same can also be done with their 'master'.

SixOfSpades 04-08-2003 08:51 PM

Bah! I say to all this Mordenkainen's / Planetar / Blade Barrier stuff! Do it like a man--what could cause the Illithids more embarrassment than to have their entire population slaughtered by a single Warrior who was completely immune to all their spells?

Do you have a Warrior? Good.
Does (s)he have more than 10 INT? Good.
Does (s)he have a Save vs. Spells of 0 or lower? Good.
Now go run along and play.

Honestly, the right tactics make all the difference between Illithids and Beholders eating you alive, and you swatting them all the hell over the place. There is no middle ground, which I find disappointing.

Spell immunity can be found in some well-stocked stores (hint hint) as well as on some scroll-dropping undead. Why skeleton warriors like carrying these things around is beyond me. Toilet paper, anyone?

Don't get too attached to cheese, especially the Mordy Swordy flavor. There is no save vs. constipation in this game, and you will run into problems if your solutions always involve summoning fleets of critters, swords, etc.

If you're looking for something to consume other than cheese, might I suggest a potion of invulnerability? A base AC of 0 and a +5 bonus to all your saves for 5 turns. Half a minute in the game world. Can we say, lifesaver? :D For extra protection, chase it down with a potion of magic shielding to provide you with +50% magical resistance and all your saving throws are made automatically. Shorter duration, but then again, your enemies will have a shorter lifespan. Try asking some of the local merchants for these two beauties, and expect to lay down ~3,000 gold base price for them both.

luckily i dont have this problem in fact im proud to say i dont even use the cloak o' cheese. Anywho im going back for the ithilids soon im out of the underdark now. So mordy sword cheese eh? o well i wont use that tactic... i dont like cheese for the above warnings hehe

SixOfSpades 04-08-2003 10:01 PM

--Which is not to say that using Mordy's Swords is inherently cheesy! Only abusing them is. Try to summon them only A) Against enemies that deserve them, or B) You're dead if you don't. (A Solo Wizard facing an Adamantite Golem, for instance.)
