Alright seeing people were complaining and after looking at subsequent posts I should adjust my stat line a bit. Didn't want to look inferior to the first couple.
Strength- 13 I'm male and solidly built so reasonably strong and I do a lot of lifting with my arms but I don't work out so basically average strength. Hard one to judge. Well Aerie is strength 10 and I think I'd have to be stronger than her.
Intelligence- 15 I'm university educated, Extremely literate and well read and can figure out problems and at least understand most things. Most definitely smarter than the average person.
Wisdom- 15 18 was probably exaggerating a bit but I've been through a lot in my twenty three years and I know I think things through before I do them. Usually I use my wisdom too much and miss out on fun because of the potential risks.
Dexterity- 10 Again average. Not really agile and my sports skills range from dire to satisfactory. Good fine detail skill though.
Constitution- 14 Only a little overweight and I have a naturally srtrong metabolism. I can carry on functioning with very little food or sleep and I practically never get sick.
Charisma- 16 Way better looking than the average person, a really nice guy to boot, no one hates me and I'm also a professional actor so I know how to communicate and convince people to do things.
There that's pretty accurate now

I think almost everyone that have posted in this thread needs to re-read Astaroths earlier post, thus I copy and paste it here:

"You all need to be realistic, How many of you had Intelligence of 17 or 18??
An 18 intelligence represents the most intelligent human potential can achieve! You all are a bunch of freakin einsteins out there. And 18 constitution and ST that's alot of Arnolds in a BG II forum! And if you had Charisma 18, you would be a superstar or President or something. Be more realistic! These characters are born and raised in a vicious world with constant physical strain. An 18 stat is THE best a human could get, while a 10 is AVERAGE! Don't tell me ALL OF YOU are well above average in all stats? We are really taking it for granted...These would be my stats I guess:
Strength 11
Dexterity 12
Constitution 9
Intelligence 14
Wisdom 12
Charisma 13
And I consider myself pretty smart. You people have been taking your guys killer physical and mental conditions for granted, There is a reason they are world adventurer's and monster slayers and you are not."

A BIG thanks to Astaroth for saying those things and pointing out to the ones posting here how stupid you sound when you say you have an intelligence of 18. You really don't know HOW much that is. Not to mention that a survey made among the American people (well, that was yanks, but still =) showed that 90% of the population thought they belonged to the smartest 10%. Your guys posts here is pretty much the same thing. And its even more hilarious to see that you think that just because you study at college ("duh I do chemistry and I can program in C++!") you think you have an intelligence of 16-18!

I am terribly sorry if I do sound offensive or so in my post, that is not my intention, but you all need to get over yourselves aswell as starting to play some of the AD&D roleplaying game as opposed to Baldurs Gate, THEN you might understand how much 16-18 really is.

And lastly, training with latex swords is a bit different than training with real swords, [twistj] =)

P.S My ability scores then?

Str 8
Dex 9
Con 12
Int 11
Wis 12
Cha 9

And no, having one ability score of 13-14 or 15 isn't SO uncommon, but having 3 ability scores above 14, now THAT is uncommon.

drezden 11-29-2000 03:48 PM

For all those that debated how common certain ability scores are, here are the probability percentiles for them (i.e. similar to an SAT percentile the score is the percentage of people you did better than), using 3d6:

18 .... 99.54%
17 .... 98.15%
16 .... 95.37%
15 .... 90.74%
14 .... 83.80%
13 .... 74.07%
12 .... 62.50%
11 .... 50.00% (1/2 scores are 3-10, 1/2 are 11-1
10 .... 37.50%
9 .... 25.93%
8 .... 16.20%
7 .... 9.26%
6 .... 4.63%
5 .... 1.85%
4 .... 0.46%
3 .... 0.00% (no one could get LESS than 3)

Hope this is helpful. Don't forget women, children, elderly people are all part of the general human comparison group. So, most men in the 18-30 age group should be able to have at least 12 in the physical attributes. If you are only an 8 strength, then what would your grandmother be??

The scores that are really rare are 16 and above; especially to have multiple scores that high. Bonus stat the odds on having 18s across the board 1 in 101 trillion.

nimzo 11-29-2000 04:47 PM

I put my intelligence at 17. It may really be 16 (I wish my player character would just show me my sheet ), but I’ll try to justify the 17.

1380 on the SAT, 690 Verbal and 690 Math. That was in 1992 before they made it kind of easier and changed the scoring formula. 29 on the ACT. One thing that you have to keep in mind on these tests is that even if you are in the 95th percentile, that is the 95th percentile of those who take the tests, not the total population, many of whom cannot even read well enough to try a test like the SAT. A 95th percentile on the SAT may well be better than 98 or 99 percent of the population could do, especially if you factor in third world countries or consider the breadth of education available in our modern society compared to that available to the typical commoner in a D&D setting.

I joined the Navy and passed Nuclear Field A School for Electronics Technicians and Nuclear Power School, which supposedly are on a par of difficulty roughly equivalent to Rice University in Houston. However, I know for a fact from my associations in nuke school that I don’t have an 18 intelligence. I’m sure I met at least two guys who did though. One never even took notes in class and still had the highest GPA in the school. Rumor was he had a photographic memory. The other guy took notes but was still a genius if I ever met one. They surely weren’t as smart as Einstein, Oppenheimer, or Richard Feinman, but I think there is probably some degree of variance even among the 18 Intelligence crowd. Einstein probably had an 18/00 Intelligence, if there is such a thing, whereas my Navy buddies were more like 18/15 or so.

I made straight A’s at my community college (Why go to a community college if I’m so smart? A wife and two kids made the flexible schedule a necessity) and passed about 60 hours worth of various CLEP exams. I just read the study guide and took the test, then walked away with some college credits. Some of you should try it too.

Weapon of choice: Glock 17 with a 17 round mag of hollowpoint 9’s. I shot so well on the concealed carry license test that they joked that I found a new way to cheat. I put a hole of about 5 inches across in the chest of the paper target at 9 feet, then when they moved the target back to 50, if I missed completely I could just say the bullet went through the hole. I was a pretty good shot with a boy in high school and also was a pretty accurate dart thrower. I could also hit the tree pretty well playing with shuriken when just a lad, if any of that helps to justify a 13 Dex.

I also like to do some of the karate katas I remember when I’m warming up to exercise. I put my stationary bike in front of my laptop and TV so whenever I’m goofing around I can get in a little low impact exercise at the same time. Matter of fact, I’m pedaling as I write now. I would adjust my Constitution up but the fact is that if I lived in the middle ages as in the D&D realm, I would have been dead probably 3 times over from illnesses that were cured by modern antibiotics. But then again, the local cleric does wonders, I hear.

One thing I would also note is that even as smart as I like to think I am, I still find AD&D and these Baldur’s Gate games not only intellectually stimulating, but also challenging. I would suggest it likely that players of Dungeons and Dragons on the whole have a much higher intelligence than would likely be found in any average random cross section of society. 18 is probably over doing it, but 16 and 17 may not be unreasonable.

nimzo 11-29-2000 04:51 PM

OOps, weird typo. I wasn't really a pretty good shot with a boy in high school. My girlfriend would had killed me if I was. I was fair with a bow, however.

bilqis 11-29-2000 05:08 PM

Is it too late to offer my 2cents to this poll? Interesting question to think about ... so here is where I think I stand in the stats department:
Str 8 (I cant carry more than 25 lb bag of groceries)
Int 14 (I'm a college grad, good with computers, a voracious reader, creative designer ... )
Wis 15 (I'm 43, supervise 100 people, advisor to many and mom of 4 kids .. god help me if I don't have wisdom! LOL)
Dex 10 (Does being a good typist count? ;o)
Con 7 (very out of shape)
Cha 13 (I am a recruiter, and a supervisor, and my program is one of the largest in the state ... which it wouldn't be if I wasn't good with people)

Chaotic Good alignment

Good fun this!

Memnoch 11-30-2000 12:41 AM

Interesting table, that percentile thing, and a good way to look at it. OK, justification of scores:

STR 13 - I can press about 120 lbs. which is what a str of 15 would be but I can't carry it for a prolonged period of time so I'll lower it by 2.
INT 18 - Don't want to blow my own horn about my 18 int but suffice to say my GMAT to get into grad school score was 700-plus - in the top 5%
WIS 8 - because I don't apply my talents, never exercise good judgment about anything, spend all my money like water and can be very naive about things, especially work politics. I'm only 25 and learning very quickly though and i expect this score to increase in the years to come.
DEX 9 - I go clubbing regularly (I don't spend ALL my time on the board believe it or not!) and so I think I'm a pretty good groover. But I'm not a gymnast or anything so I'm average.
CON 13 - I haven't ever had to go to hospital for a serious illness my entire life. If I get the flu or bronchitis it only takes me a day or so to kick it.
CHA 17 - I have a large circle of friends who all like me, always socializing, doesn't mean I'm a stud or anything but I've founded university business clubs where membership started at zero my first year and by the time i graduated 3 years later membership was up to 300. Also I had a lot of job offers where success in the interviews was largely due more to how well I could bullshit my way through them.

End of justification!

Armisael 11-30-2000 01:01 AM

Neat. I think I'll join in.

DEX: 6
I'm clumsy, I can't dance, I repeatedly trip over myself, I bang my head on door frames, etc.

INT: 9
I did a full humanities course. The only thing I'm much good at academically is writing, and even that's debatable.

WIS: 4
I'm a common sense moron. No, really, I don't know jack.

CHR: 0.3
I won't spell it out. Suffice it to say, a big clumsy tactless guy who's more likely to trip and fall on you than smile that winning smile doesn't make for a very charismatic person. Actually, this was a joke at my own expense, it's probably about two or something.

STR: 15
Ah, here we go. I don't work out, I don't exercise, I don't play sports to stay healthy and I eat the most disgusting food you can imagine. However, by some bizarre twist of fate, I'm a walking tank. Good old genetics.

CON: 17
Well, this is probably a little overdone. You can kick me in the stomach and it'll take a full minute for me to realise it, and even then it won't have hurt much. I've never gotten a serious illness and, despite my poor eating and living habits, I'm fit. Strange but true. I'm not complaining though, if I didn't have these two traits I'd be a geek.

Kore'tha-Konkoror 11-30-2000 01:08 AM

Am I the only guy on this thread that isn't a kickboxing, kung fu, sexy, genious bastard? Geez! Anyway.

Str 14 ( 15 when I work out, which I will be getting back into soon )
Int 15 ( Think of me as the kid that never showed up to class, didn't study, but still received awards, honors, good ACT score and a modest 3.2 high school and college GPA, with minimal effort. Am 132 IQ, tested )
Wis 8 ( I'm not unwise to the point of being gullible, but I do make bad decisions that show I've still got a lot of livin to do )
Dex 9 ( Not very limber, at all. Could use some yoga and stretching exercises )
Con 13 ( I used to be worse but I only get the flu like once maybe twice a year for the past 4 or 5, I have no allergies or physical ailments or impediments, poison ivy and things like that dont bother me. I'm a pretty healthy guy come to think of it, could stand to lose a pound or two thanx to Dell's awesome gaming rig they sold me. )
Cha 16 ( I'm a very kind, courteous and polite person. I'm pretty good lookin, but thats not my main charm. It's my honest, no bullshi*, friendly tude that wins most over. and if someone does have a prob it's usually because they're an a$$hole or have some hidden problem/jealousy/agenda. I'm like the kid on the sitcom that comes over to the main characters house and charms the mom and wins the dad's approval )

The kung-fu bit up top was just a joke. There's no reason to believe why clubbin people, and bruce lee wannabee people, and kick boxer people, and even genius people wouldn't derive enjoyment from a cool game and some online banter. I too am a studly bastard that knows the ways of the shao-lin art of breaking hard things with my pinky toe.
( Toe-Fu ) get it?

Glorick the Half-Orc 11-30-2000 03:17 PM

Interesting...

Str: 16 Well, I bench 265 and I weigh 160... But I think 17 Str would be about a 300 bench.
Int: 15 My IQ is 155 so this one is easy. You people who put 18 are unrealistic, heh. Magna Cum Laudi with BS Degree in Computer Science.
Wis: 17 My strong suit and the reason I am the President of a decent-sized company specializing in Business Process Reengineering.
Dex: 15 I play "Open League" soccer (semi-pro) and I play in 2 softball leagues every summer (fast pitch).
Con: 15 I get sick easily but I can REALLY take a beating. I boxed for 4 years in High School.
Cha: 10 I piss too many people off to have a high Charisma.

BTW, I'm 30.

well if you read the AD&D manual, itll tell you waht average scores are, the avg scores are the ones that dont give +'s and no -'s

so like 8-14 are considered avg i think, thats overall
unless you've developed your skills (lots of schooling, bodybuilding, gymnastics etc.), they'd all be average stats.

ive seen some of your 'stats' and got quite a laugh at them

Melusine 11-30-2000 08:48 PM

Hmmm.... I'd have to say that my mental faculties are probably a lot better developed than my physique

Strength: probably 8...hey, give me a break, I'm a girl so I have to depend on brains instead of muscles
Dexterity: 12/13, I used to do gymnastics
Constitution: 9, I catch -or rather get whacked full in the face by- every cold or flu bug going around
Intelligence: I think about 15, they teach me all kinds of academic and analytic skills at school so I could probably work my head around most problems
Wisdom: 13/14 probably more life experience and insight than others my age
Charisma: 15/16 or so the people I've asked tell me (I think this is the one stat that you can't guess yourself)

Vlade 11-30-2000 09:45 PM

well lemme see,
STR 14(i was the machine gunner in my section in the army)
DEX 16(kinda average, my eye-hand needs some work but i was a markman with my weapons)

INT 16(IQ 134 or thereabouts, can take apart a bomb-did it once, nearly pissed in my pants)
WIS 9(i know when someone doesn't like me)
CHA -18(how much CHA would u give to Diablo?)

Geez... just reading back through some older posts, thought this one was kinda interesting...
seems like a lot of intelligent like to Role-Play...
I could not believe that some people here were like 40+ and stuff, I guess, in my small sheltered world the only people who actually play games as far as I can see are teens, like me (I'm 17)... No worries, just proves you are never too old...
Makes me think that my Dad (sitting beside me playing Diablo 1) is not such a freak!
but anyway, seeing as I am pretty new here, I thought I would post my own personal stats, hopefully with no gross exagerations...
str = 9 (gotta work on that)
dex = 14
con = 8 (cant drink beer for shit - seeing as that seems to be a general judgement on this one )
int = 14
wis = 13
Char = 14
(there... just a rough guess)
Hope no hard feelings for dregging this up!!!
P.S. where do English skills come into it?

bazz1234 12-30-2000 07:14 AM

Well guys i am glad someone broght this to the front, i onyl joined recently, (just got the game) and have not worked my way back through ALL the posts yet...

So i would guess i have the following:

STR = 15 - i am not a bodybuilder, but i'm not a wimp either.. maybe i shoudl go down the gym some more!

INT = 17.5 - i am fairly clever, not a nuclear physysist or anyhting, but i get by for sure!

DEX = 13 - Ok (ish)...

CON = 15 - Carrying on the whole tolerence to alcohol theme i woudl say this is pretty good. I can drink like a fish, so i am ok here!

WIS = 12 - I make some STUPID mistakes ervy now and again, but mayeb when i am older this one will go up.. (while the rest come down). Am only 19...

Yorick 12-30-2000 08:01 AM

Str:12 - 6ft tall & athletic but no muscleman.

Dex:16 - quick reflexes and co-ordinated enough to play five instruments. I run everywhere.

Con: 9 - fit and swim/run a lot, but I do seem to get sick a fair bit.

Int:16 - self taught in the above instrmts. Good general knowledge and memory retention. Widely read.

Wis:16 - taught at a bible/music college for four years (still only 29), so if a cleric needs wisdom then a clerics teacher does.
People say I can develop an argument well - to their frustration. I suppose a truly wise person though would mark their wisdom down (The more I know the less I understand)

Cha:18! C'mon a pro performer has to have this don't they? Huh? Does this make me arrogent?

Class: Bard
Proficiencies: Axe (guitar of course)

P.S. Draggor, what have you done as a pro actor?

Valsalva 12-30-2000 09:56 AM

It's been a while since I looked at all those old AD&D manuals, so I'll be estimating my scores. Anyone know if there's a more accurate way to calculate your scores? I know strength is based on military press, but what about the other scores? Anyway, here goes. I will *TRY* not to overestimate myself, so I'll include some explanations I'm sure you're not interested in. I'm in with the group of people who think that a score of 17 or 18 ought to be pretty exceptional, so I agree that quite a few people here are being overly generous to themselves.

STR: 14 (I'm not sure, but I can certainly military press 140 lbs. Maybe more, but whatever.)
INT: 16 (Isn't this supposed to be your IQ divided by 10? I don't remember. Anyway, IQ 164, perfect PSAT score, 1560 SAT, 1440 SAT in 8th grade, 99th percentile MCAT, etc. And yes, this was before the SAT got easy. This is probably the most inflated score across this thread, IMHO.)
WIS: 10 (And that may be wishful thinking. . .)
DEX: 13 (I'm athletic, but being 6'4" kinda cuts down on my quickness a little. So, I'll put myself on the high end of average. I'm a good dancer, according to just about everyone who sees me in the clubs, so I don't feel bad about this score.)
CON: 14 (Pretty healthy, but I'd hesitate to go higher than this. I probably don't even deserve this, if you go by Astaroth's justified post.)
CHA: 16 (I've done some modeling, and I get along with people. Wouldn't a 17/18 CHA be beautiful and get along with everybody they met? I'm a bit too aloof sometimes for that, I think.)

So here you go. I humbly submit my addition to this exercise in vanity. Or maybe not so humbly. . .

Charisma is a personality trait, a way of communicating in an open, empathetic and persuasive manner, inspiring public speakers, cult leaders, or certain actors would have much charisma without needing to be great looking.

There was a play by mail game called LEGENDS which used charisma in a different way. Similar scores attracted. So a half orc with 3 cha would be able to recruit others with low charisma but be less sucessful with higher scores, and high scoring elves had trouble recruiting low scoring dwarves.

Really good looks could serve as a negative modifier in that people can react negatively to an overly 'pretty' person ("She's got no brains"). Just as they do to a really mean mutha. Good looks would be a positive only if they helped the confidence and approachability of an individual.
