Amidst reports the industry is on a downhill transition, pioneering developers Pandemic Studios and BioWare are reporting something a little more positive: four games in the 2005 top 10 (three of them original properties) and more than 28 million games sold that generated more than $800 million in revenue. Not bad, kids.

The NPD Group's data says Pandemic's Mercenaries became the best selling new property of last year as Star Wars: Battlefront II became the second best selling videogame of the year with more than four million copies sold - and it was only on shelves for two months.

BioWare had a bit of a slower year, but Jade Empire was certainly no slouch when it came to critical acclaim. "By pushing the limits of these new worlds and building 'event' products and by continually focusing on creating the best place for team-oriented talent, we will continue to drive innovation in the industry and deliver top-quality games to our valued community of fans," says BioWare joint CEO Ray Muzyka.

Neither company has laid out much of their plans for the next-generation consoles, though BioWare's brief showing of their planned Xbox 360 trilogy Mass Effect suggests the companies are poised to be just as ambitious on the coming consoles as ever before.

Just goes to show - making fewer, better products is better than making more, crappy products. See the recent demises of Atari, and a little earlier, Interplay for proof.

"Breaking news, making quality products sells."
Sometimes I wonder how some companies can get so successfull whent hey are so clueless about their market.

As I've been saying for a long time, we need the current crap companies to fail so that we can get a new generation of developpers. I think it's started already, Pandemic Studios isn't the only new name around.
