I've decided to clear up my HDD....
So, few questions. I seem to have lost scandisk, it isn't in system tools on the start menu (running XP)...Anyone know where this is? Roughly how long does it take to run Disk Defragmenter on a 40Gb drive (4600rpm). I've cleared all cookies & temp internet files, as my laptop is mainly used offline, but there are about 17 TIF's that refuse to be deleted, and are annoying me. Anyone know how to get rid of these? Thats all for now!!!

Bring up Windows Explorer. Right click on the drive. Properties. Scan disk.
Probably <35 minutes, though it will depend how much data and how badly fragmented. |

The time for scandisk depends on the number of files it has to process... so keep track of it this first time. I'd expect an hour or two, based on my laptop (where I've got a couple hundred thousand files on my 40GB drive); if it takes less, you can be pleasantly surprised.
As for getting rid of those .TIF files, I can think of two reasons why they can't be deleted: because they're in use, or they're protected. If they're in use, reboot in safe mode and they should be killable. If they're protected, unprotect 'em.

I got rid of all TIF files, and it took me an hour and a half to defragment.
Will scandisk when I can be arsed... Cheers guys...

Nope, no option for scandisk there....
There is an option for, "checking the volume for errors". Now, this seems awfully similar to scandisk to me, I'm gonna run it now anyway...is that scandisk??

That's the closest thing for scandisk you're gonna get, so go for it. For some reason the Microsoft programmers saw fit to remove scandisk from XP. At least that's what I'm told.

I've run it, and yup, it's pretty much scandisk.
